Check engine light reset how long smogcheck ?

Guys,
The Check Engine light was reset about 1 week ago when I bought the car.
So far I drove about 220 miles but still fail for smogcheck. Its the self-testing that did not pass. How many miles do I have to drive in order to pass ? Some told me 97 + takes about 500 miles, is that true ?

Thanx

It's not a matter of distance driven. It's a matter of all conditions being met for all the readiness tests to be conducted by the computer. Typically, normal driving for a short period will meet these conditions. There is a prescribed drive cycle that should meet all conditions in a single drive of a few miles. If you search around, I think you'll find it. It would help to know exactly what test isn't complete. It's also possible that one of the tests has failed rather than being incomplete... or do you know that it is an incomplete rather than failed test?

as brett said, its a matter of meeting conditions. drive the car for a while then take it back...

the good new is, if you get stopped, you cant get ticketed, if you show the recent incomplete test paperwork.

Brett and Bayhas are both correct. You have to drive the car so as to complete the test. This is what they call the OBDII Drive Cycle Test. There are "monitors" (i.e. EVAP etc) that has to complete and these monitors are what the computers from a local DMV test sites are looking for. Every car manufacturer has some kind of procedure on how to complete these tests. As an example, I got a new Code Scanner and tested it on my 2002 Ford F150. One of the things that the scanner can do is clear the codes which I did. A week later, I brought the car for inspections and it failed one of the monitors (in this case EVAP). It never completed the test because it has to meet the right condition. I found the procedure for the Ford drive Cycle and was able to complete it. I don't have the Mercedes Drive Cycle for I have a '93. Different tests are done for my model but they do still check for percent HC (Hydrocarbons)

Just a suggestion, before bringing it back for smog test, just make sure you have all the monitors solid by using a scanner. If you do not have one, go to you local Autozone and have them check it out. Here in NY you pay $37 ($10 for Safety inspection + $27 for the Emission Test). Once you come back for the test, they will do only Emission so $27 only. I don't know about your state of CA.

here in MASS you can retest for free, since it is practically not "your fault" the car is not ready...
