Hi, I've finally made up my n00b mind and I'm going for it, I'm going to buy the w140! Woot! (Who’s gonna’ welcome me to the club?)

But the thing is, I've found a few good low mileage w140's with around 60,000-80,000 miles on the clock, ranging from 1992 - 1995. I found a few 1996-1999 models but the mileage exceeded 100,000. Both finds are around the same in price. (Although I did find a 98 w140 with 68,000 miles on it, but that was a bang for the buck.)

So what are the main changes they had in mechanical and technical wise in the w140's for each of its years? And which one would you guys reccommend?

Thanks
-Zonet.

PS: All of them ranged from the S320-S500. (I did find a S280 but that was Short Weal Base, I'm looking for the Limo (LWB) editions.)

Edit: I forgot to mention, I can't really afford the s600 (or even the s500, but if its worth it, the s500 is the most I can go.) but if there were anything changed on either one, and if its better then the s280-s480's then please let me know. Also, I read somthing about one of the models having more gears then the other?

I don't want to sound like a jerk, but have you used the "Search this Forum" button? Honestly, this has been gone over a hundred times.

You could always check Wikipedia too.

welcome

;)First of all big conrats for deciding to become a W140 owner and driver. Those are heavenly cars and even just looking at them is a sole pleasure. What makes you buy one is absolutely the outlook of that stately structure isn't it ?
Having said all these when it comes to pick one of the engine types ,model years and milage ;
I highly recommend to go for 96 and up models for various engine & drivetrain modifications, mostly sorted out initial years' production errors and slightly better look as well.
I definitely recommend the ones with lower milage and absolutely complete service records.
Lastly for the engine type, it takes a million year to finalize this discussion (the other guys above are right), so it absolutely depends.........:thumbsup:

GO BUY A GOOD W140, GOOD LUCK AND AGAIN WELCOME ON BOARD...

A WELL documented well MAINTAINED higher mileage 140 may be a better decision then buying a lower mileage no records kept car. Good luck with your search and ask any questions you may have and ignore anyone who is rude to you :)
