Question Do the w140 sedans have foglights???

I was under the hood replacing a fuse and I notaced that there is no fuse where it says fog lights. You can pull the dial inside the car towards you and an orange light comes on but I never figured out what that actully did. So does it have fog lights or is that only for the coupe?

On the sedan, the fog lights are built into the side of the headlight assembly. On the coupe they are below the bumper.

On the later US W140s late '95-on, the foglight is below the headlight in the headlight housing, the high beam is where the foglight was on the early models.

Yep, it's in the housing, below the low beams. On the sedans, if you pull the headlight switch out one click, it engages the front fog lamps, two clicks and it's the rear fog also.

Since this was new to me, I had to check it out on the car. Plus I wanted to know what the heck a rear fog light would look like!

The fronts work as described in the earlier post - no surprise there.

The rear was not easy to see at first as it is just a brighter addition to the normal tail light. I did determine that the bulb is out on one side but was not detected by the bulb monitoring system. So now I have to figure out what replacement bulb type is required.

Always something new with these cars!

Now I just need to wait until next November for a foggy night to try them out for real.

If you're thinking you have a bulb out because the rear fog was only on one side, stop. That is the proper mode of operation.

Obviously some folks need to spend a little quality time with their owner's manual. So, to sum up:

-- The front fog lights are built into the headlight assemblies on sedans and under the front bumper on coupes.

-- The rear fog light is inside the driver's side tail lamp.

-- To activate, pull out on the headlight switch. The first detent activates the front fog lights, the second detent activates both front and rear fog lights.

-- The orange indicator on the switch indicates that the rear fog light is on.

Other neat things:

-- If the exterior lights were used during the drive, the front fog lights illuminate for 30 seconds after the last door has been closed.

-- There are two positions to the left of "off" on the headlamp switch. These activate the standing lamp feature, which illuminates the parking lights on either the left or the right side of the car.

Also, if you don't have an owner's manual any more, you can probably find an electronic copy here: http://bayhas.com:8080/w140manu/

Actually this is the US version. Early US headlights had a yellow foglight inboard (toward the grille) and low/high beams in the main part of the housing. They also used the extremely crappy 9004 bulb which has a short filament that is perpendicular to the bulb glass, resulting in VERY short throw for the lamp.

The later models (late '95-on) had the high beam where the foglight was and the low beam with a new bulb that had much higher throw because the filament is parallel to the long portion of the bulb glass and could take advantage of a more complex reflector. The fogs are in the main housing below the low beam.

The Factory Xenon also had this late-style design, but the lens is slightly different.

See the pics for the early v. late.
