Hi
Take a look at these compared prices , Why would the 91/93 500SEL & the more expensive later 93/98 S500 have such a Value in Price difference, i know it has been stripped of some of its chrome & other metal to plastics components & acessories, but it couldent be that much , they r basically identical , Also the Cars in the US seam to be cheap incomparence to what they sell for, here in Australia . There is an S600 for sale for 45.000AU$ , thats US what , @ the moment it is 43/44.000 US$ & guess what it sold, another S500 for 43000AU$ (not sold yet ) and around the 30.000$ mark for other w140s currently on the market here , the W220 is available for around 80/60.000$ .I think that the W140 is holding its Value very good so far ..
Ciao

starter price?
Well, the only thing that I can think of is that the SEL's were more expensive to begin with. My '93 500SEL was $96,500 on the sticker (no I didn't pay near that!) the ones that came later were considerably cheaper.

You know you're German if:
You went to school in a Gymnasium
You check your shoes for candy on December 6
You have real candles on your Christmas tree
You know a Frankfurter is a person not a hotdog
Schnitzel with noodles is your favorite meal, not a song in a cheesy musical!
You drive the Autobahn in a Mercedes-Benz at the speed of sound!

Quality, quality, quality.
If you have a W140, take it out for a nice, long drive. Then stop by a local MB dealer and check out the new W221 S-class. You'll be glad that you have W140. They can't use fancy electronics to distract me from cheap plastic and nasty leather.
A good indication of "size matters" would be to take out the floor mats from a W126 or W140 and compare their size to a W220 or W221. The W140's mats are area rugs in comparison. The W221's mats are about as big as a place mat.
The pre 1995 models are solid gold (not trouble free, but true, engineered locomotives for the road). The later years aren't bad, but side-by-side, you'll see a difference. Any W140 year is better than a W220 or W221.
Seriously though, the question remains whether 92 - 94s were overpriced or whether 95 - 99s were lacking in quality by $8k. A slashing of 9% for something that was for all intensive purposes the same one year to the next is really hard to wrap your mind around! Had the complete opposite effect on depreciation than did Lexus' year to year price increase on the LS - no wonder they were able to claim lowest depreciation in the industry for so long...
Hi
I have the 93 S500 , it is one of the last once build from that year before the modifications came in , infact it is badged S500 not 500SEL,it has all the good stuff in it and looks absolutely stunning , i will have to Tint my Windows Black/silver as i'am sick & tired of beeing constantly look't at ,or call it purved ,whenever i stop at traffic lights or so,gee what is it , havent they never seen a descent car or what here, even my Wife has agee'd to it ,not that i personally like these Black windows ,as my Original light Greenish looks good , the problem with my Car is that it bores me ,there is never nothing to do on it ,it dosent even brake down like some other's ( mabe it will all start now ) ,i change the oil once a Month just for something to do on it, i also clean the car underneat ,she's in Imaculate condition ,at least i try to keep it this way , must b one off Car from the Merc Factory ( unbreakable for its reputation ).
In Carparks i always find myself a Parking lot where no one can possibly park next to me ( right left front & back ) it is possible trust me ,sometimes i walk a bit but i dont care .Next i will be installing a GPS tracking device for when i have to give the Car to the Mechanic to do a Service , with this Device i will know if he is driving it around unauthorized or not , not only the Mechanics but also for addet Security , i dont trust my Car beeing at in nobodys shop.
I dont really like the New'r W221s interior layout, there is something missing ,a gap in the centre console and no gearstick the exterior i dont know looks weeird to me , the w220 as we all know has Electrical Problems ( will you make it back or to your destination without imbarassment ) other than that looks good (looks good mmmhh ), i wouldent swap my current Car with neither of the 2 but i wouldent mind taking one for a drive ,thats about it ,just to c how they drive or where are these new improvements, i dont c my self enjoying it for a long term like i do with the W140 ( love those little rearend Antennas popping out then back down ) .
Long live the W140 91/93 or cutback 94-98/99
Mercedes hiked the asking price of the W140s by substantial amounts over the W126. The asking price for a S600 was almost sixty per cent more than the outgoing W126 560SEL.
Politically incorrect from the moment it arrived the W140 was never popular and DB had problems selling them and ended up having to flog them off at prices well below original list.
Changes to parts and materials in later model year cars was a natural process but also designed to reduce production costs and bolster profit.
Still the peak of quality. Never bettered.

I doubt it. The longer a vehicle is in production, the more of it's tooling and manufacturing costs are paid off. So that makes me think that the 1999 S500, at $94,000 was more profitable for DB than the 1992 500SEL was, at $105,000.
