ASR problem for last time....i surrender guys

hi guys,

Some of you might have followed my thread about my ordeal with the ASR. I got a 92 600SEL with 90k kms on it and had it for a year, and the ASR light went off 3 times.

The first two times, i brought it back to the dealer closer to my house (not as good as the one i always go to, but since it's closer, i thought, what the hell), and they "fixed" it. The first two times, they said that it was first malfunctioning spark plugs, then it was malfunction brake sensors, then it was computer malfunctioning.

Long story short, the ASR came on AGAIN, and this time i decided to go back to the original dealer i always go to (the service manager is family friend). After he looked at it in depth, he said that the car has these problems:

1) the Electronic Throttle (aka DK Motor) on the right side is broken and the left side is about to die as well
2) the Electronic Control Module is broken

to replace these parts, it would cost me $13k. No joke.

My question is, have you guys actually HAD these parts malfunction? any comments or feedbacks? Know where i can get a set of used ones to replace? Are these parts universal for all W140 or is it 600 specific?

Please help, as $13k is something i am not intending to pay, as that is the price of my car....any help would be greatly appreciated, thanks!

Sucks big time! I knew a guy who had the same car as you and he put $17,000 into repairs and after that the transmission would not go into reverse. You fix one thing on these cars and another problem pops up. The throttle body and MAF malfunctions are common on these early w140's
May be time to give it up. Everything ends. My sympathies.

Don't know if this is any help, but you could dig around and see if your parts can be "cleaned" and put back to use.

Yet another ASR Problem; '94 S500

You could also part the car out. At 90,000 kms you still have a extremely low mileage car. A junk yard might also have the parts for pennies on the dollar. I bought a super clean interior part for $70. The dealer list price was nearly $700.

If I ever have to give up on my W140, I'm going back to a Cadillac. Cheap (used less than 20k miles), but very plush for an American car. The only problem is they tend to fall apart mechanically at 75-90k. I've gone through several.

I'm riding my Benz until it doesn't ride anymore. If it has a significant ($10,000+) repair it's going on ebay one piece at a time.

Hey. You really should check around the world for those parts.. I know they aren't easy to find. In good/guaranteed condition. But have you tried alle the links at the bottom of this page ?

Hi sir,

The dealer told me that I will need:

Both right side and left side ELECTRONIC THROTTLE (aka. DK Motor)
and the ELECTRONIC CONTROL MODULE

if you can find any parts like that, it would be greatly appreciated.

thanks

There are several throttle body rebuilders: Jayton, BBA Remanufacturing, Beckmann Technologies, for example.

Look 'em up.

The dealer's code reader will indicate the ASR control module as possibly defective in addition to the ETA. In reality, it is likely that only the Electronic Throttle Actuator is defective (two on the V12, going out one at a time). I had the same problem on my '95 S500 and I was told both the ASR control module and the electronic throttle actuator were defective. An independent determined that only the electronic throttle actuator was defective. These will fail at a certain point and are difficult to rebuild properly. I had a new OEM unit installed by my independent for $1620 parts and labor. He did not charge me the usual dealer price.
