1995 S320 Dimming rearview mirror

I was driving down the highway yesterday and hit a bump and my interior rear view mirror plastic housing decide crack inside and blow open exposing all the guts.

So I called the Mercedes Dealer and they want $945 for the part and I started laughing and told him I will call them back.

Does anyone know where to get them at a way better price? Or is there a after market one that is good? I check ebay but did not find one.

Does two plastic covers fell apart or glass itself broke, if its just two plastic covers fell apart they are fairly easy to fix, there are two metal spring strips which are holding front cover on to the mirror and mirror is resting on a bracket or a base plate, 98% of the time tiny plastic latch on front cover which locks the spring broke apart and both covers bust open, check your front cover and see if your latches( there are four of them , two on top and two on bottom and the look like a little square) are still there, if they are still there find those two spring strips and try put them together, if latches are gone , then u need a tiny drill bit and little bit patience, ****I HAVE DONE THIS ON MY 1993 400SEL, PLEASE MAKE SURE THIS APPLIES TO YOUR CAR****
Put the spring in its place where there was latch once, and drill a small hole on top through plastic cover and into spring, I recommend to do this on a work bench or a steady table, please do not do this while you are sitting on the car, basically your are improvising latch action by introducing a screw from top and bottom to hold the spring in place, I hope I haven’t confused you, if I did my apologies, I will try to find some pics on this project and if I find them I’ll post them for you. GOOD LUCK

LOL... seriously, get some automotive glue and glue that stuff back together, thats what I did after I kinda BROKE mine... i busted the clips or something and it wouldn't snap back together properly, so i straight-up put a wad of glue on the one side of that internal piece and just glued it back together.

It's held together perfectly with no problems ever-since, perfectly good as new... it's just another means of holding it together instead of those stock clips that i busted, works just as good... much better than spending a lot on even a USED mirror housing. It's all inside anyway, you'd never be able to tell, and it obviously doesn't affect the auto-dimming or remote lights, although yours is a 95 so you probably don't have the remote lights, i think yours are on the door handles.

Edit: To be more clear, i glued the black plastic piece directly to the glass instead of using the clips to hold it in, and snapped the exterior pieces back together around it. As i said, works just as good.

As long as your mirror glass isn't broken that's easy DIY. Click on the link two posts above this one. It took me all of 20 minutes to do mine.
