I have done a few searches, but have been unable to come up with the answers I'm looking for.
I have a 1993 500SEL, and the speedometer, odometer, trip odo, and MPG meter are not working. I also am showing the ABS and ASR caution lights on the dash. Is there a possible connection or single point of failure connecting all of these? I read that it could possibly be the left front wheel speed sensor, or perhaps the over voltage fuse (which I cannot locate).
I should mention that the odometer and trip odo are both displaying a value, but neither are increasing. All other lights and gauges in the cluster are working as well.
This is less important, but I am unable to use the functionality of most of the A/C system buttons. Do they tend to wear out over time or become dirty? The system works, so I guess I shouldn't complain...
Finally, I was wondering if an OBD I sensor would be able to read the codes from the computer.
When the ABS and ASR lights are on does the car drive in the Limp Home Mode?
Opps, I should have mentioned that.
No, it does not appear to drive any differently than I would expect it to. I have a stone lot, and I was able to get the rear wheels to spin out a bit, so I am assuming that LHM is not active.
I would check the condition of your wiring harness to start.. I'd also recomend getting a hold of the Service DVD... One NEEDS some direction when DIY'ing a 140..
The clusters are known for problems as an aside, and the push button units do wear out with time. HAven't had much luck cleaning them.
The car starts well but idles a little rough for about 30 seconds to 1 minute; I suspect this could be a cold air sensor, MAF, etc.
If these cars sell (I think they will at the insane pricing... ) I will probably get more. Do you know where to find the service DVD? Is MB the best place to go, or are there reputable aftermarket places?
The early 140's (esp the V8's) are insanely cheap right now.. Typically because the owners have let things go a bit and nothing is more daunting $$ wise then bringing a 140 back in line!
The rough idle could be a Bunch of things..but if you have multiple lights on the cluster I'd start by inspecting the harness..if it shows any signs it Needs replacement before you do anything else.
The ABS speed sensor is above and attached to the strut mount on the rear right. You can access it by prying out some of the trunk cladding in front and to the left of the fuse
holder. Maybe your sensor wire has come loose or the sensor is shot. Take a look. Could be a single point of failure.
