400 SEL Engine shakes

Hello Friends,

I need your help with some issues I have with my 400 SEL.
Engine Shakes at idle, on clod start and when I stop at light, sometime at cold start intensity is more than "normal" and feels like engine is going to die any second, if I parked my car for few hours on a upward slop i.e. front of the car is raised when I start the engine and put in reverse for a fraction of a second it feels like engine is going to die, oil pressure needle , rpm needle the all fall down(it happens for a fraction of a second)

Here is what I have done so far:

Check wiring harness by slitting open protective shield on MAF, fuel Injectors and all wires are in pretty good shape (there actually is a shine on em and no cracks)

Changed both engine / motor mounts (very nice improvement, don’t feel that grinding feeling in steering wheel)

Ran my home made Analog Pulse counter for codes and found 2
Starter lock out / backup lamp fault (my starter wont lock and backup lamp works don’t know why I am getting this, I tried several time to clear it but it always come back)

Engine RPM mis-match Diode (for A/C don’t remember exact words)

I jacked my car on stands crawled under it and found that protective shield on knock sensor wire (on far side of oil pan) is gone but wire seems to be okay.

There is a "thing" on front upper right side of oil pan in engine block(oil pressure sender may be??) its wire just fall apart when I touched it(broke right at the connector), I patched it with new 4" wire cut open the plastic connector and solder the new wire.

Ground wire at alternator (thin one) fell apart as well and I did the same thing.

Check all Engine Vac lines (I hope I did em right) by removing Air Cleaner housing start engine and taking one line off at a time and putting my thumb on each outlet to see if there is suction, all line checked out good except EGR valve.

Air Cleaner housing is coming off MAS very easy, it feels like its just sitting there( isn’t there supposed to me an air tight seal between Air Cleaner housing and MAF) after putting back Air Cleaner housing I blocked both Air ducts and car was still running that tells me MAF is still sucking air(is it normal)

Do you think it has anything to do with CAT convertor or O2 sensors?

Please Help, regards

Check for Ethanol

If you have used ethanol blend, ie the 10% or less that is typically being blended into all gasolines - this could be your problem - especially if the car has been sitting for a day or two (or longer).

Check threads on ethanol - if you have it - it is destroying your engine, fuel pump, fuel rails, and injectors.

I can provide more details if you need it.

syphon the gas out of your tank - put it into another vehicle or store it for your lawn mower.

Good luck

thank you very much guys, i will get sea foam today ,put in with the next fill up and will let you guys know the result, ETHANOL..wow.. that means i am in trouble, i live in st.louis MO and pretty much every gas station is selling 10% blend ethanol, i am using shell 93 octane for about a year, is there anyway we can do something to neutralize ethanol(any additive) also what do you think about Air Cleaner Housing not sealed enough.

Thanks again

Same here in central Florida, every gas station has benzanol-gasanol ,and they trying to push 20% Gasoline could go from 10% ethanol up to 20% - USATODAY.com

I'm thinking on installing a water separator, any one else thought about using it?

No additive availalable that I know of to neutralize the effects of ethanol. Alerting consumers when 10% ethanol blend is present is a state by state legislative issue; most do not require it; some oil companies label the pumps anyway, some do not. - Oil companies do not want to advertise this too much because of all the negative affects of ethanol:

poorer mileage
less power
cold start problems
hot start problems
corrosion of internal parts (read - steel, aluminum, plastic, rubber, etc).

Ethanol will absorb any moisture in your tank - the only redeeming quality

Ethanol is a scam on the consumer; benefits agriculture giants and oil firms.

I have had a carberator disolve on a hot rod I have because of ethanol

Some stations around here (SC) advertise "pure gasoline, no ethanol"; maybe you can find the same. - talk to some hot rodders, especially 60's muscle car guys - they typically know where pure gas is available.

Good luck
more info available if you need it.

Hi
When i 1st board my S500 93 model i filled it up with the ordinary Unleadet Petrol and it had the exact same symptoms as u described so i addet a couple of litres of M Spirit thinking that there was water in the tank , Spirit as u probably know will dry up water in your Tank instantly , it wasent so i filled it up with the best Petrol around 98 0r 99 octane and guess what the problem solved within a few kilometers , these cars /engine like good clean Petrol so give to them .
Hope this helps u out with all the other members's reply s combined

Ciao - I have the same experience- I try to keep pure gas in my s500. I have a small truck as my daily driver - occassionally it will get some ethanol blend and I can tell immediately. After a fill up of pure gas - the symptoms go away after just a few miles of driving.

Everyone needs to stay away from ETHANOL if you can - but it is getting harder and harder to do so.

Here's a an update, as we all know gas without Ethanol is getting more like girlfriend with drama, but seafoam does the Job, i usually fill 10-12 gallons of 93 oct gas at a time and i use two seafoam cans with two 10gal fillups and now engine is running smoother than ever. Thank you very much all you who posted there comments.

Ciao
Today i filled my Ute up by accident with this 10% Ethanol Petrol from Mobil ( i never go to Mobile , there Pumps r so confusing ) ,anyway , once it came trough it soundet like the engine had a prickeling barbaque under the hood but the old Nissan ute just kept on going & going as if everything was normal even standing the rpm/s totaly normal , u figure this out , the Old Nisssan Navara ( 89/90 ) probably would even still drive if i fill'd it up with half Diesel and unleaded , most likely smoking away but the more modern Benz no way it would go normal , no wonder the Benz is classified as a Girl , thats why we like'm so much , right .?// haha ..
Ciao ciao ...
