does anyone know what the red canisters under the drivers seat of many non NA market w140s are? are they fire extinguishers? if so, whats the need for them? tradition? regulation? or is it an aftermarket mod the owner made?
this is what i am referring to, though it has looked different in other pictures. never seen on a NA market 140s. placement / location always the same...

dbs600,
I cannot vouch for other markets but in the UK it is not compulsory to have a fire extinguisher. I have never seen one fitted in a UK W140 with the possible exception of an S600 but like the other models in the range this would have been an extra cost option.
My own 1988 300SL has one fitted as standard. Because we drive on the correct side of the road the fire extinguishers are fitted below the front passenger seat which suggests that Mercedes do tend to mount them in the same place (at the foot of the front left side seat).
