It is about turning off one or two features of the alarm.
Pressing the upper one will temp. turn off the anti towing alarm.
(like when being transported on a ferry, where waves will set the
alarm off (personally experienced, or more correct, experienced
by fellow passengers trying to sleep in their cars...))
The lower is to turn off infrared interior alarm.
Good to have when leaving a dog inside the car (not saying one should
do so...)
Thanks guys! Just so that I understand, you're telling me that the panel on the right is able to be programmed with a date / time and the car will automatically turn on at the programmed date / time? Sort of spooky. I assume the car CANNOT be driven away if turned on by this feature - correct? Also, I've never seen either feature for the NA market...? And, love the picture Syl, very tough looking!
Some additional, and not terribly cheezy looking, aftermarket wood panels never seen before. Don't think I would add to my auto, but thought I'd share. Enjoy!

No It's not starting the car. It's a gasolin burner that heats up
the cooling water and AFAIK also run the blower to heat the
cabin.
Neither of the options on the pic posted by dbs600 were available at the U.S. market. They were available worldwide, although the automatic heater was only popular on Northern European countries (like Sweden, Denmark and Finland). Some fully optioned cars on Germany and Russia also have this feature.
The extra heater could also be ordered with a remote control. So if you did not pre-programmed your car to heat itself at a certain time, you could remotely do so from you house 15-20 minutes before you got out, so the interior and the engine would be warm for your departure.
This feature was not exclusive to W140s, it was available to C, E and other classes as well.

Thank you for the further clarification. Surprised by all of the features not offered in NA. Looks like weve covered most, but lets see if we can come up with more...

Not too bad - as you say though, not really my thing either but interesting. What are the stripes in the carpet I wonder? Wear?
