windshield wiper sensors

my 97 s600 coupe is equipped with automatic wiper sensors so if its in the number 1 position the wipers are suppose to work when it senses rain. Mine doesnt work very well if not at all sometimes and was wondering where is the sensor because maybe it just needs to be cleaned...any advice would be great.

Also.....how does the wipers on the headlights work? Ive never seen them work and was wondering when do they turn on...the manual doesnt clarify

Headlight wipers only work when the headlights are on AND you turn on your windshield wiper with the wash/wipe option. I can't help with the auto wipers, maybe someone else can.

I haven't used the S500's auto wipers for a while but if they're anything like the ones on my Phaeton then film and wax can cause the sensor to go funny.

If you're in the US get some Bon Ami pan cleaner (preferably without bleach) and give the sensor area a good scrub. Failing that, if you have an unused clay bar, use that with some lubricant on the sensor.

Hope that helps!

To answer your question, the sensor is mounted behind the rearview mirror on your front windshield - top center.
