Steering wheel shakes back and forth

I have a 1992 600SEL with about 108,000 miles on it. The steering wheel seems to shake back and forth at different speeds the disappear. The wheels have been balanced and rotated. The rotors are new as well as the pads. I was thinking the problem may have to do something with the front end parts such as bad bushings or control arm. Any suggestions or advice, thanks.

It's quite a common problem often solved by bushings in the front end sometimes also swaybr links and upper control arms are worth replacing too. I'm assuming that it's shaking at about 50-60 ish?

ive recently noticed mine shaking with braking as i was preparing to exit the highway today...it seemed to be more the front end shaking than the wheels shaking, but the wheel was shaking too...

They didn't overtighten the wheels when they were balanced did they? Should be 150NM.

Shaking in the steering wheel under braking is probably bad lower control arm bushings - fairly common on heavy 140s.

Dead easy to drop the steering damper and check that. Causes vibration under braking and wandering/tramlining when going straight. Cheap to fix too.
