I've searched the posts and haven't managed to find the answer to the difference between the S500 and the S500V. I'm looking at a 1997 or 98 S500, which may or may not be a S500V,(depends on which part of the listing you look at). I'm near Toronto and the veh is a North American/Canadian spec.
Help and comments would be appreciated.

Difference is 3" behind the b-pillar ....meaning in theory the S500V should be the long wheel base, but most S500 are longwheel base anyway (or mostly it would be L as of S500L)
Just so you know all W140 started as 500SEL or 500SE (for short) and later in 1994 it changed to S500 but for while it was S500L (lwb) and then they dropped that L and V completely

I think you are confused by the W140, V140, and C140.
Which are short, long and coupe of the 140 series.

V was never a part of the badging.

I don't think he is, I distinctly remember seeing those designations early in the day and wondering why the hell Mercedes went through a rebadging process that to me seemed cheap. It all ended with the adoption of names for trim levels-though that didn't happen with the 140s, (Avantgarde etc), that was the biggest step towards runofthemilldom and made me think of cars like Nissans Micra-Wave or Fords Fiesta Jazz.

I absolutely agree. But would be interesting to see such a badge and to learn, where it was used...
....but I hardly can believe that.
Best regards
