Talked too soon, bang theory revisited

Well.....It is like this. I came home just now from anther short run. Got on it a bit going up my road. When I pulled up in the driveway, I heard some knockin'. But before I got the hood opened, it shut off. When I refired it, I heard a metallic sound banging under the motor...not good. So, I am right back were I started..but worse. I don't want to know what just let loose. Jesus H!! Man, I thought I had this "F" thing. Must have been an error on my part some where...I don't know. I thought that if the t-chain was off a tooth, it would have not started or just flew apart from the moment it fired up. I would have to argue that because it did run liked a raped ape just before.
Iam at a loss with this gentleman; I am to have a very good parts car here in the future or....?
Will have to sleep on this one for a while and contemplate a plan. I thought about just pulling the motor, but I know how much internal parts are. I only got about 13K$ into this shit and don't want to get in too deep. Damn shame; I just put on the carbon fiber pillars and AMG mats.
Even more weird is, I don't really feel that bad. I never got to drive the car before I permanently fucked it up. So, if any of you have any advice or know of any parts that you may need. Let me know. I will post in the classifieds here and at MSF if I decide to part the car. Have to give this some time, sorry I couldn't make this a learning exp. with a good outcome

ps Brett..

The people I talked to 1st was 4mercedes.com via Fla. They were the ones that stated they did not replace the wire. I thought I had mentioned this on an earlier post, sorry for the confusion.

ok, first does it turn over when you try to crank? iam not sure becuase you say you can restart it and it just makes banging noise....by what you described it does sound like chain has jumped. But it could be something very trivial also you said its comming from bottom of motor and chain would probably cause noise from heads etc......Try to find out where the banging is coming from (stetoscope like doctors have is great for that). And dont do any more runs until you find out what it is.
BTW I heard of M119 with jumped chain as many as 2+ teeth still runnning but just real rough and stalling on lights etc. so i reckon with M120 it must be even easier as there is more cylinders to keep it turning over somehow....but as i said before you rip into it again try to locate the noise

Also iam not sure if this of any help but things like "new water pump, or oil level, Fan hitting something" come to mind when you are talking about metalic banging/knocking noise....

Dont worry, remeber last time you nearly gave up when you couldnt start it and it was "just" ETAs it will be trivial again iam pretty certain, you did the job with surgical precision as far as i can tell from photos of your DIY....

thoughts crossing my mind...

I had a good friend come over tonite and his thoughts made some sense to me. Iam thinking that maybe the tensioner came loose or was installed wrong. Alldata shows an exploded view of a tensioner and alys out a procedure for installing it. From the chain of events on how the car ran today, maybey the tensioner just loosend up, Thus causing the slack to cause a miss then eventually backfiring at idle. When reaving the motor, it would not miss.. I don't think the chain can jump-a-tooth off the sprocket because of the design of the the rails/sprocket space. Therefore, I will take out the tensioner tomorrow and see how loose it is when removed. Hopefully, this theory can save alot of work. I also saved the old too.

Ah, OK. It would be nice to have all this in one thread so all the historical information is at everyone's "fingertips" when reading updates.

Sorry to hear of the misfortune. Hope it is correctable with out too much more dough.
