How to remove Headlight switch knob

I feel like this is a dumb question because it's so simple.

The headlight switch on my 96' S500 needs replacement. I have the part (number 14 in the graphic), but I don't want to break anything on the way to get it. Alldata shows the knob for the column up/down in/out as just pulling off. I've looked at it and gently pulled but I don't want to break the switch. Can anyone here confirm how you safely remove the knob (number 1 in the graphic).

You need to push release button with the flat screwdriver. On you picture in the upper right corner (item 2) shown with the screwdriver at the knob.

Sorry, wrong answer. You don't need to remove knob 1. Just remove screw 4 and take switch out.
Also, you can get to switch 14 from the top after removal of the AC grill

Thanks, I need to fix something on that vent anyway so I may try that route.

Changed the headlight switch today with no problems. The new one has nice positive detents and the old one sounded like a baby rattler when I shook it. As Myarmar said, it is much easier if you also remove the vent register and remove/replace the switch from above. The switch is so large I don't see how you could remove it thru the hole that Alldata indicates. And also as Myarmar said, you just pull the whole column tilt switch out with knob attached to get the front fascia cover off.

Between Alldata and this forum, a guy with a few tools can save significant $.

BTW: the swtched just started yesterday when i got home. i had my lights on and when i got home i notice it was kinda hard turning it off like it was caught on something. Once i turned it off it wont got back to the right.. but it will turn left. Help!~

Have you tried pulling it (fog lamps) and then turn it right?

Yes i pulled out the fog lamp and it works. Other then that when it isnt pulled it wont turn to the regular headlights. It feels like something is blocking it from going right. I can turn it but i dont want to risk breaking anything if i forced it to turn. what do you think that is bad on it?

I have a problem with my turn signal, on the left driver side, it will stay on at all times even with the car off, you guys think this might be related to the switch???
