Check the Door Checks!

I just replaced both front door checks on my '98 S500. Was not too difficult with great instructions from article on MercedesShopWiki: MercedesShop - Do It Yourself.

One side was making horrendous noise (door sounds from a horror movie) and the other was starting to sound the same. I noticed on both of them that the two mounting bolts accessible when the door is open were loose (do not need to take off the door panel). On the very noisy door the mounting flanges for the door check (secured by those mounting bolts) were broken off which I believe was caused by the loose bolts. The check for the other door was not internally damaged and I think that just tightening up the mounting bolts could have definitely helped.

Something easy to check and fix if your doors are acting up.

Apparnatly another sign is that the chrome along the window ledge on the doors does not line up straight along the length of the car, replacing the door checks is supposed to address that issue.

Clarification

The door checks I am referring to are the devices mounted inside the door which prevent the doors from opening too wide and also provide a smoother, more controlled opening (spring-loaded ball bearing slide arrangement). I do not think that there is any way that they could impact the alignment of the door.

Really? I was sure that over time due to the weight of the door the doors can get out of alignment and droop ever so slightly as the check gets stressed, perhaps it's another part.

I'm pretty sure that when the door is closed (and thus the mis-alignment visible) the door check is mechanically out of the picture. And the door check is relatively free to flex in the vertical direction which wouldn't restrain the door from sagging.

Hinge pins wear will cause droop. Lightly oil at each service. Lithium spray grease on the check slides.

Have the same problem that came up. The internal portion of the check broke and when I closed the door it put an outward facing ding on the outside of the door. (Window only opens partway) Going to open it up and order the parts tommorow. (never ends)

I had 'em do my driver's door check strap at the dealer. It was making a lot of noise since I bought it, and I was told that if the strap goes, it'll put a dent into the inner panel of the door. Definitely not a good thing.
