So I just registered for these forums while looking for help with my S420, and here's what I have noticed about the car:
First-What I have noticed in the past month or so, when driven hard (racing etc) and shifting out of first gear (automatic), at about 6,000 RPM, the engine chirps, I haven't really noticed this when it gets out of second, but I'll test it again when I get home (currently in Hawaii on vacation). I've driven the car fairly hard a few times, but just started noticing the chirp recently (started driving it harder about 3 months ago). There seems to be no loss of performance whatsoever, but it is somewhat discerning to hear the chirp after hitting 45 mph in first.
Anyone have any ideas on how to fix it? I'm assuming it's a drive belt problem.
Second-The car is sometimes very finicky when starting up, on occasion (~1/3) it will sputter and just die, I'm assuming this is because it's and old car with an old engine, should I just live with it?
Third-This may just be the brakes getting old (although they were replaced 3-4 months ago or so), but when braking normally (from like 25MPH->0) there is a little rumbling noise/feeling coming from the brake pedal, is this normal?
And finally, does anyone think it would be worth it to look into getting a supercharger for this car? Or should I just drop the idea.
A little bit of background on m/my motives:
I'm only 17, recently acquired this well-kept S420, and naturally (being a teenager) I tend to race my friends, especially on local drag strips, my biggest contenders is my friend in his '98 M3 (275 HP to match mine) and my other friend in an Audi A4 1.8T. Any advice on what I could do to boost performance of my car without running chances of screwing it up is appreciated.
Thanks for your time guys
PS~Yes, I realize it's somewhat immature to race, but at the same time it's horribly fun.
hahaha dude. seriously...racing w140?
immature yes, stupid yes....
and you will never beat m3 or even a4 1.8t with bulky w140.in your dreams mate.
about your brakes...
have a look on your brake disks, they might be to thin.or maybe need re-machined.
check brakepads aswell as they might be installed incorrectly.

You want some more power try this, do a bit of tune up iam certain that car is well overdue....and iam talking about spark plugs, fuel filter, and air filters you will be very surprised how much more "umph" you will get. and check you dist cap and rotors as they are probably bit coroded...after you do this it might also stop dying randomly, Also i would loose some weight like swap spare wheel for repair kit and maybe take some insulation out.
Ohh and depending on your year i would look into getting one of those ebay ECU chips they give you around 10% hp on well running engine (i have one on my 500)
and if you have more money to burn good 3" mandrel bent exhaust will give you some more hp....
And good luck but seriously racing W140.....let us know when you end up parting it out i will buy some parts :-D
miloking:
well so lets say he will get extra 30hp on all the mods you listed
but you forgot to mention rice stickers, dont they give extra hp aswell?
ahh i like this thread,
Hetszle
im sorry, dont want to be mean, but you should understand that people will diss you over here for what you doing to the mighty w140
if you want to drag race get a sports car or something that CAN race, evo's,wrx's etc etc.
If you want to race, get someting different, the car has ASD if you spin a wheel it will apply the brake, for what a supercharger costs (if there is a kit for that car) you can get a different car. My suggestion would be to save your money, you need it soon for other things that go bad, Dont ask about K&N or cold air intakes.
I assume you got this car from your parents or relative!

If you turn off the ASR then it doesn't take alot to overcome the rear pad grip. Quite right re the cold air; it already has it. I get the feeling this car is going to be thrashed, broken and sold.
I fail to see the attraction of drag racing. Surely the biggest wallet wins. Try a few corners too. Whatever way you cut it though, the weight of this car will cripple the performance. Put the same engine in something a tonne lighter and oh boy! Top Gear did this with an XJS; stripped it out and gained a huge benefit. The trouble is you then lose what this car is all about.
If you want excitement then get onto a race track and grow proper balls.

Hope you get nicked by the fuzz????
The guy said he raced on the local drag strip not the street. (He might mean the street but he didn't say it, so give him a break)!!
So by my reckoning what you are all saying is he has bought a limo so treat it like one, right?
By the same logic then so anybody who has an AMG model should drive it hard all the time and if caught just cruising around with the throttle even half open hey should be ridiculed on the, (usually very good), forum he comes to help for right?
Don't listen to them. Do as you please. Yes the 140 is a big heavy car, it's built for high speed cruising and point and squirt driving which sounds to me exactly what you want. Understand that it may cost you a lot if you abuse it too much but go for it. It's your money spend it how you like. Don't know much about performance upgrades by try looking to the bigger models in the range for the first. You may find for example that for some parts may fit straight onto yours but have a higher performance.
Hey Hetzle maybe the other has beens are just jealous. Spend the cash on a 500 may be a good way to get a cheap-ish performance boost.

Don't get me wrong, each to their own. Also the W140 is surprisingly good on the corners, but hell it's heavy.
You will have much more "speed" fun in something cheaper and lighter.
I like a RWD Escort Mk IV with a V8 in the front driving the rears on Cosworth running gear. Holy cow it goes on the straights and the bendy bits. It isn't a limo though.
Yup, you're dead right there. The only problem with the 140 is the design of it doesn't lend itself to easy tuning.
You know what I mean. Traction Control that can't be swithed off, handbrake design that inhibits creative turning with it. The list goes on.
