Question Buy '98 S 500 or keep '92 600 SEL ?

I met a guy that has a Silver on Graphite.int. 1998 S 500 ( one owner) with 100,000KMS on it. The car looks & sounds great. He's buying a new ML class & wants to sell it.

Relaxed, he said..."Make a offer" has all service records from local MB dealer.

My current car is the 600 SEL of 1992 I know all the pros and cons so...
should I sell my 600 and pick up the newer, S 500

Im very serious about the matter, If you please, give your opinion & regards.

Thanks!

Personally, I'm primarily interested in owning and driving the limited production stand-out models of any car. For me, that means only the V12 W140. For more sensible people ( ), the decision is probably based on what you have invested in the 600SEL... Lots of money spent on solid repairs and good maintenance recently? Does it run well? Look good? Has it been a money pit? No question, you're going to take a hit on depreciation with buying the newer car, but there were upgrades mechanically and cosmetically between 1992 and 1998, that maybe you like.

The question is what can you get for your 600? What you might be able to do is get a trade in value for both your 600 and his 500 on the new ML.
Then pay him the difference, he trades your 600 and you drive the 500 away. The '98 500, being nearly the last of the 140 series, would be fully sorted and a good long term bet. What you miss in the power stakes, you'll make up in the newer interior, climate control, 5 speed tranny, and fuel savings.

Depends how much you want the V12, compared to the later S500 IMO thats the only thing your old car has going for it over the newer W140, so you have to ask what you want more the toys and reliability of the newer car or the power of the V12 I'd go for the S500.

Ben Franklin balance sheet: power, driveability, your style of driving, condition, spec., how much of a known quantity yours is etc. See how one stacks up against the other.

Only you know the truth.

How many miles did you have on your 1992 Mercedes 600SEL? How does the condition of your car compare to the S500? I personally would prefer the 600SEL to the S500. I drive the early W140 too (a 1992 300SE) and it still runs strong and very reliable. I think it looks better than the facelifted ones too, as it looks bigger as it should be.

Cheers,
Adam

plus the S500 doesn't come with reclining rear seats, AIRMATIC, power rear view mirror, 409 HP, rear parking markers, 417 lb. ft. torque, and a suede headliner.

Arrow

My 1992 600 had a very good past. One owner c.e.o. , Non smoker. Silver on black leather. 402 H.P.

The owner kept the 600 maintained 15 yrs at MB.

Despite 237,000 kms the 12 doesnt consume oil, is very powerful and cost me about 2K in repairs since last July. (I feel lucky) Touch burlwood.

The 1998 S 500 is also one owner(another exec), Smoker, Silver on Graphite, 304 H.P.? 107000kms, MB maintained.

The engine must be full of carbon since it never rolls over 120/70Mph.

I'll try to post pics of both.

Thanks for the input & views, they are interesting.
