Car wont move forward

Okay, this is a long story, and I hope there is some one or some people who can help me out, I was stopped at a red light tonight and I realised I had gone over the white line on the road (which here in England is illegal), I noticed a police car approaching so I tried to reverse the car quickly behind the line before he notices but as soon as I did that the lights turned green, so I quickly moved the gear to "D" and hit the accelerator, the car moved forward but than all of a sudden there was no thrust, all I can hear is the engine rev...

After I pulled over I realised I could still reverse easily, but everytime I try to move forward, all I hear is the engine rev.

At first, when I put it into "D", the car would move slightly forward (as it would do normally without me actually putting my foot down on the pedal) but after I got it towed it doesnt even budge an inch.

What have I broken?

p.s Now that I think about it, reversing the car was a pretty stupid thing to do in the first place as the police would have known I was over the line anyway, but it was a spur of the moment thing and I didnt really think about what I was doing.

Fear Benzkid is on the right track. We call this brake-band in Germany, no idea on the proper English name, but whatever you do, take the car to an automated gearbox specialist and get box completely reviewed.

Don't leave it at Mercedes and don't go half way in part-exchange.

Best regards

Complete revision of a gearbox in Germany with new wear and tear parts is around 1.500,- € at an automated gearbox specialist.

Should be similar in the UK.

Well I drive a 190e, so it's a lil less techy as 140's, but I was quoted 1100 by my indy. What ended up happening with my car is that there are like 4 pins in the transmission. Apparently one of them fell out and that caused the problem. I would present that to your mechanic as a possible cause of the problem. Ill try to find a pic of what I am talkig about once i get off work.

Probably not if he can still go backwards. I'd expect he'd hear the shaft clanking around if it were spinning loose, too.

yes I did read that bit, we had a 190 once where the half shaft boke in such a way that there was some drive in reverse owing to the nature of the break, if it broke at the diff end you would not hear it

Only thoughts Malcolm

The broken shaft would still turn with the wheel hub, however, if the car could be made to move at all. So, it might knock around still. Regardless, this is easy to rule out with a 2 second visual and should be checked out.

Uh....... Barry! What are you? A cop ?? If so, I understand your response. Also, how can a cop afford the maintenance costs' alone in owning a Mercedes-Benz? Oh, I see.......... another "Dirty Cop" on the take. Do they come any other way?
Hey look I don't think we need that, there is some truth to what he was saying if that caused the gearbox to be damaged then it would have gone anyway sooner or later. You should be able to back the car up and then put it in drive with no problem. :(

I find it disappointing that miloking and bigbruce are insulting the police, what do the police have to do with a transmission problem? work out your mental problems on your own time please.

I guess pigs are just doing their job (collecting money) best they can...i will cut them some slack next time i get pulled over, while they are doing their duty to society - being as*holes on powertrip.

Again my apologies if i hurt any police officers feelings!!!

It is true alot of the police here are dicks and spend far too much time on the roads collecting tax.
