Is this a charactoristic of an Automatic car but when i engage the car into reverse once stationary after coming from drive when i apply the gas the car will jolt backwards sharply, if i wait 3-4 secs before applying the gas wit my foot on the brake you can feel the car engage reverse and its not a jerk but you can feel it through the car. Is this normal
No, I think you might want to look at getting hte fluid in your gearbox changed.
ok cool ill give that a go, im not sure its that as its not noisy or anything and its only when reverse is engaged, to move from reverse to drive is a smooth transition

Yea it's usually some kind of an indication that the box may be on the way out but some people have managed to bring it back from the brink with a fluid change, put it this way I doubt it would make it any worse.

On the Way out Dont tell me that please, i promise ill never use reverse gear again
erm its hard to say when stationary engaging reverse and waiting 3-4 seconds you can feel it engaging mainly through the brake pedal,
but if you go from being stationary in drive to reverse then applying gas straight away you get a jolt/jerk probably likened to Starting a manual gar in gear,

Apparantly if the car is rolling and you change, like for example you back out of a driveway fast and then throw it into gear the car delays a bit, but just putting it into reverse there should be a bit of movement ie that you know the car is in reverse but not a jolt.
your reversed is delayed, a very common issue, if you change the fluid you might make thigns worse but I dont think it will fix the problem. You cant give it gas till it engages, so you should wait those few seconds, before applying the gas otherwise it will take off. I wouldnt change the fluid, mine had a delay, changed the fluid then totaly lost reverse. Few others experienced this.
