Hi,
I was wondering if any of you have had any experience with a scratching/scraping noise which seems to come from the steering wheel just beneath the air-bag area. It make the noise when the wheel is being turned in either direction. It sounds like metal on metal or plastic.
Thanks,
Dave

My 92 500 SEL did that, they indicated it was the clock spring which transfers the horn from the wheel. Well they took off the whel, it did not have the clock spring (early model) they cleaned the contacts and lubed it, gone!
Dave, you're right to be concerned about the air bag. These things scare me too. I had to replace the steering angle sensor in the car, and that required the removal of the steering wheel. Even though the battery was disconnected, I was still very nervous. I had eye protection, ear protection, extra under wear;-) on, and sat in the passenger seat in case the bag exploded on me.

Yea I don't know what it is but I have a mortal fear of the airbag in that wheel more than any other car I've ever driven it looks like the type of thing that could kill you.
