There should be an engine trouble code reader under your hood, you can delete the codes from there and that might take away your cel (check engine light).
Its going to be a 1 inch by 1 inch square box on the radiator side or passenger side, near where it says battery in trunk. Youll find this little box capped off, uncap it and you will see a push button with an led. you can do this with the engine running or with the ignition turned all the way right before you start the engine. Then go back to the box and push and hold the button for 4 seconds or so, and it will start flashing (if you have stored codes), write down the number of flashes, then you can press it again for 7 seconds to erase that one code. Press the button again for 4 seconds to read the next code, followed by 7 or so seconds to erase. Again writing the codes in between. I believe cars up to 95 have this on board code reader, my 94 has it, and received EGR and a few other codes in the past. These codes will only be engine codes, which what turns on the cel. Please tell us how it goes and anyone else that has a 95 or lower it wont hurt to check for any stored codes using this method.

According to this page he should have the on board diagnostics reader and he also shouldnt have an obd2, if this dont work he would need to go to the dealer.

OBD2 is all 96 and some 95, I didnt pay attention when i read the orifinal post and thought his car is 96.

94 has star 34 pin connector, the dealer should clear it for no cost.

this is for OBD II, aka 1996 models and up,

all pre 95 require a Mercedes STAR 38 pin scanner.

Why do you feel there wouldn't be a diagnostic charge (1 hour labor) for this? I ask because the check engine light on my '94 just came on, but drives fine. Instead of messing with OBD, if free, I'll just take it to the dealer...
