hey guys, there seems to be something wrong with the center brake light on my car(the one inside the car, behind the rear seats). it keeps on going out and its not the bulb. The indicator light on the dash keeps on coming on so i check my brake lights and sure enough its the center one. I change the bulb and it works for a few minutes, then the dash light comes back on. so i check the bulb but its fine. i put it back in the socket and it works again for a few minutes. Im thinking its the contact beween the cap that holds the bulb and the socket because if the light goes out all i have to do it move it around alittle and it starts to work again but only for a minute or two. watcha guys think? is there somewhere online where i can purchase the whole center brake light socket assembly? thanks guys.

if you are getting the warning indicator while the light is TURNING ON that means you have used a light bulb with wrong wattage, get a halogen 20W bulb from the dealer.
if the bulb is going out completely, then yes, you need a new socket, and nothing to worry about, that is normal, in fact, mercedes recommends changing the bulb and the socket at the same time.

no i dont get the warning indicator when the light turns on, its only when the light goes out. so is there anywhere else to get this socket other than the dealer?? because the dealer is always overpriced. thanks

true... however, that particular socket is only 6 bucks at the dealer.
I will note I had all winter one year this issue with the light out indicator coming on when using the brake in order to shift into reverse, but only when it was cold enough outside. This issue was traced to a 7W bulb that had been installed in the third lamp, versus the proper 20W bulb. In cases where the bulb lamp comes on, check all the bulbs and ensure they are the proper wattage.
I had the same problem. Turned out the socket contacts had become loose and intermittent with the bulb which actually caused arcing and degradation of the socket contacts, which then made the problem worse. I took the assembly out and cleaned up the contacts with sand paper and then bent the metal so that it made positive contact with the bulb. That was 2 years ago. No problems since.
I did what you said Brett and it worked like a charm. Thanks alot buddy!
Now i have another problem. Its more of a cosmetic problem thats been there for a while but i just havent payed much attention to it. Whats happened is that the plastic cover at the bottom of the B pillar has formed 2 long cracks on both sides. I have a picture that better illustrates what im taking about.
Now ive looked around online but so far i havent found any website that sells this part. I was wondering if anyone knows where i could possibly find this or if i would have to get it straight from the dealer. Thanks alot.
