Wear and Tear of 20s

Hi,

I have been looking at some 20" rims and received two different responses about the wear and tear on the brake system and the suspension. Theres a guy who has a S500 on 20" and says the ride quality is amost the same and hasnt had a problem with the suspension or brake system. My mechanic, who deals with lots of benzes, says that the brakes can't take the rim and that my suspension system will suffer.
I'm thinking of putting 20s for the summer, which is about 5 months, and put back stock 16s for the winter.

Anyone out there with 20s on W140 can tell me if you had to replace anything because of the rims?

gotta love your mechanic... yay for all of the mechanics who give an opinion based on personal prefrences! can he even explain logically tohimself why the brakes wont take the bigger rims?

20s will put some extra effort of the shock, due to the lack of the extra air/tire cusion between the rim and the road surface. but thats very marginal, in other words, if you are that worried about that much of wear, you might as well not drive the car...

get your 20s, bling it on...and enjoy your W140.

That's the only logical reason that I can come up with, the air/tire cusion. Thanks for your response. I'm not getting bling, I'm gonna get brabus replicas, just because brabus does not make this wheel no longer, and it's gonna be the same colour as my car.

They actually look good, but if I go with those they will be painted to match my car. I've seen those on a S600 with the same colour scheme and it looked really good standing and much better when the car is driven.

Kuts: those 3 spoke wheels looks nice, look even better when in motion. good choice. if i hadn't gotten my amg replicas i would definately consider these wheels. i have 19 and the ride is just fine, i would agree the shocks and ball joints will have to work a little harder. i dont seem how it will effect the brakes all that much. how much do they cost and do they come in 19 inch aluminum finish?

They come in all finishes but only in 20s and 22s. I wanted 19s in those also but they dont make them. The price is $200 each CAD. However, these are replicas since Brabus does not make this style of wheel anymore.

Thanks for all the responses.

i have 20s on in the summer and the only thing you have to worry about is the potholes and the messed up roads....... the car i feel rides actually smoother with the 20s then with the stock 16s.....i have 20 inch chrome rims from carre... the cm-1.......and i have cracked the one rim, got it repaired twice, and it wont hold air...... i am putting them in a dumpster somewhere and getting new ones....but as far as the ride, it is great....
