Radio removal without the keys?

Ok all of you genius people out there. Is there a way to remove the radio without the removal tool? I ordered the kit but can't wait for the week for it to arrive. I simply need to get the console raised to reach the lighter wires and can't do it without removing that darn radio. Any suggestions would be great. Thanks!

RE: Radio removal without the keys?

I totally agree.....BUT....maybe someone says it is a simple as 2 paper clips...no harm no foul...I dunno. I really need to get this radio out. Maybe I will travel to my nearest dealer, a whole 40 minutes from me, to buy an extra set.

Very easy, take a credit card that is too old or whatever, cut it up in sizes that will fit the slot in the radio. Insert and pull the face off.
I did it a few times, now the face comes off with a nice pull when I want to.

RE: Radio removal without the keys?

For a Mercedes Blaupunkt, the one with the slots on the bottom rocket buttons. Don't know what system you have. It's very easy to do. You need to lengths of flat steel, the width of the access slots, round off the corners, push in and radius the clips outwards, this pushes the side holding clip in. You should then be able to slide it out. To get to the cigarette lighter wires, you need to remove the gear change wood, so you can remove the centre wood. It's not a difficult job, but you need to know what you are doing and where all the holding screws are. When you remove the radio, you will (should) see a black plastic case.

RE: Radio removal without the keys?

Thanks for all of the suggestions. The keys did arrive a little earlier than expected. Man, it is amazing how well they work. I was very happy to see how easily the radio came out with the correct keys. However, a strange thing happened. After all of my work was completed, the radio now works without any key in the ignition! Do w140's do this all the time? The funny thing is, I never once touched a radio wires. I just unplugged the existing to remove the radio only to plug them back in again in a day.

This is the way it should work. However, it works only for 30 minutes without the key not to run your battery flat.

German engineering, you know.

RE: Radio removal without the keys?

Hooah!!! I knew I read that somewhere before down the line. My wife was actually arguing with me that it never did that before. I told her, we just never tried. I think in all of my preparation of removing the radio, I read a ton of documents and remember seeing the radio will work without the key in ignition for a certain amount of time. Thank you for the response, you just made my day! Chalk one up for the husbands....

RE: Radio removal without the keys?

Glad you waited for the keys. I tried to take the radio out of my ford without the correct keys and shorted the system out. Cost me a new radio.

On the no-key radio operation, my teenager taught me that one. you can turn the radio on with no key in the ignition and it will work fine. However if the radio is on while the car is running and you turn the key off the radio will shut off. Pretty smart system (unless you have a teenager that will drain you battery listening to his/her CD's while you are in the store. Good thing I keep jumper cables in the trunk)
