Crackling Sound Behind Dash

Hey Everyone,

Sometimes while I drive, a crackling sound can be heard from behind the ac control/dash area. It happens at least once every time I drive and it seems to happen when I turn off the ac (so I can open the windows), but it doesn't always do it when it is off. Any ideas? I'll try to get a recorded sound sample.

Thanks

Try to use a better word to describe sound than crackling. Crackling like aluminun foil being crushed ?Snap, Crackle and POP was a cereal and I still dont know what it sounds like. Be more specific if you can.

It sounds like sand falling onto aluminum foil. It sometimes also sounds like two pieces of plastic, that have been glued together, being separated.

You may have some small leaves in your outside air intake. Check the outside intake with your hood in the upright position.

I know that I cleaned out the top of the outside air intake. I'll try to see tomorrow if I can get inside it to clean it out. That is possible, right?

I have a similar deal.I believe it's coming from 1 of the blower fans in the dash.

OK...

So, I've taken the car in for service, the first time I do this since I bought it 2 weeks ago used at 136 K miles. They're charging $100 just to check it out (the sound) and let's see if they discover something.

Hey folks!

I just bought a 300SDL and I'm having the same problem -- at higher RPMs it sounds like a little elf is making popcorn somewhere behind the dash. While this is happening, I stop the car and I don't hear the sound coming from the engine compartment. Really sounds like it's somewhere behind the dash.

Thanks all! Aren't these wonderful cars?
