I have a problem with my 1993 s320, the fuel consumption gauge will shoot across to the right side of the scale as soon as the engine is started, with just the ignition on all appears normal . I have done the self diagnostic test reading 24/16 and all other gauges( except the clock does not work) are accurate. I have done an instrument cluster voltage supply test and all have voltage.
As a side note: the guage connections appear the same as a 96/97 but the front is the early digital temp display only.
If I am reading correctly yours must sit on the left side and move to the right when you are moving. Mine starts on the right and stays there, the meter only goes to 20?? surely that cant be correct?

RE: fuel consumption gauge help please
mine sits on the left when idling then goes to the right when I start off. The dealer said it was normal (it does contradict what is says in the owners manual), but the dealer said it had something to do with replacing the instrument cluster with an update when it fried itself about 5 years ago.

You know you're German if:
You went to school in a Gymnasium
You check your shoes for candy on December 6
You have real candles on your Christmas tree
You know a Frankfurter is a person not a hotdog
Schnitzel with noodles is your favorite meal, not a song in a cheesy musical!
You drive the Autobahn in a Mercedes-Benz at the speed of sound!
Exactly, manual says it should be at the right side at idle, so dont worry.
That stupid gauge shouldt even be there, or the dial should be 0-10, since the car doesnt get more than 10 mog anyway. hehe[:D]
ahhh..3 more hours till I get out f work and drive again.
The fuel consumption indicator (if all are the same as mine) reads L or I guess in your case Gl to 100km or miles. The point then being that if you are sitting still with the engine running your fuel consumption will be higher per 100km/60m. This seems to be normal to me.
The gauges sometimes get stuck. If you remove the cluster unit and rotate it a few times, it may help. I had a gauge with a similar problem. Electrical contact spray on the contact may also help...Do not us WD40...get some from contact cleaner from Radio Shack. It's frustrating that it does not work, but when they do work they are not accurate!
Mine hovers close to 30 mpg at 65 mph using 93 octane, with the mods I have done. New chip, 2xK&N filters, 8x Bosch Patinum+4, and tyre pressure of 32F, 36R. In reality I get 28mpg all the time on the highway.

What are your octane ratings like over there? I was told the other day that they were low. For example in New Zealand we have two fuels a 91 and a 97.
