Just when I thought that I was getting this car back to near new condition, my wife comes in and tells me that the Charge Indicator Lamp on the dash came on when she started the car and did not go off. I went out and checked and sure enough the lamp was on (kind of flickering, but still on).
I few months ago I had a new belt, in addition to a lot of others things, replaced, so I am pretty certain that is not the problem. I looked and the belt did not break. Where should I be looking? Alternator? Battery?
Bad alternator, or just a bad voltage regulator on the alternator.
I believe the voltage regulator is replaceable separately, but I'm not 100% sure on that. You'd have to look around to see if you can buy just the voltage regulator for your alternator.
Yes, you can purchase the voltage regulator separate from the alternator. It’s not a difficult DIY job – at least on a 400SE. The VR isn’t a very expensive part either.
Turns out that the alternator was bad. I found a shop that rebuilt it for $160 with a 1-year waranty. Slowly but surely this car will be 100% new. The only major thing that I have left (I hope) is the throttle actuator. $1500 plus labor.
