I was stuck in traffic for 45 minutes today trying to get to the gym. An accident ahead caused a huge traffic. Cops closed down the road for 45 minutes and as I was sitting in my car, I was looking at a BMW that was next to me. BMW 528i 1998 or so. This is the car that I was considering to get after the Benz, that or a 740, but a 528 was the choice due to its docile size, looks and good fuel economy. After sitting in traffic for 45 minutes in the comfort of an Elite Benz, I realized once more that, there might be no intelligent replacement for this magnificent vehicle in the near fututre. Damn the Mercedes company for failing to provide a followup to an awesome W140.
After 4 month, I am still looking foward to driving this car everytime I wake up.

RE: Love my 500SEL (stuck in traffic)
i know what you mean. When i lost my first s500 in an accident, i realized that they are really good cars, and there is no substitution for one. I really wish that Mercedes would make another car like the w140.[:(]

What about the newer s class? I sat in one hte other day at the dealers when my w140 was being serviced. they dont seem too bad. but I dont like the interior. there seems to be alot of 'stuff' all comming at you at the same time very in your face.
Newer S class looks small, and it feels very light. Doesn't have the heavy feel of heritage and vault like behaviour. I would get one only in S55 or S500 Sport form. S430 is slow as hell.

if you thing the w140 feels heavy, then you should try a w126. i have both, and although the w140 is very good, the w126 feels a bilt more stable, however, that weight does not help you with the corners and handling of the 126.
All that heat buildup in the engine bay with the car sitting still can't be good for it. There is a cover/pan on the passenger side under the engine which can and should be removed for a cooler running engine. I did that about 6 months ago, and the engine ran cooler by a few degrees (verified via OBD), not just the cluster temp guage.

i think NZ Benz is talking about the w221, not the w220.

yea the w221 was what I was refering to. I dont think that I would buy one though (if I could) Its too much like a nissan or a honda in the styling and so on. I have not driven one so cannot comment on that. They are an ok car and all teh styling on all the car makes seems to be heading that way. I would have to say even if it pains me to that the new 7 series from BMW seem to be the most like teh w140 with their slab sided look.
