Why would you sell the AMG rims off of your Grand Edition??
This guy on ebay has a 1999 S 500 Grand Edition, and he put the stock 97-99 rims on it. Why would you do that[?] In my opinion, the Grand Edition is very nice because of it's amg monoblock rims, in addition to all the other options that come standard on the 99 grand. Why wouldn't you just buy a regular 99. whatever the case may be, it is still a very nice Grand Edition, but it still has a lot of miles.
It is also very amazing that this car is made in 3/98. I know it is the model year, and not the year it was built that matters, but this is very interesting how they were made so early in 98. When did they really stop the w140?, and when did they really start the w220's production?
lots of questions, [?][?][?] probably many answers.[:)]

I don't think that 100K is a lot of Miles,I would be more throubled by the fact that the dealer checked by the condition report every item with only "good",that is not excellent and you know by "dealer language"you will have flaws.
Also no visible rust makes me think what we have hidden here.

Damn dealers... I used to sell cars, and its really hard to be honest and make a good living. Lies and cover ups will yield you fast cash, but in a long run, I would rather be an honest dealer to have my customers come back to me later on. I wasnt any good selling cars back then, thank god I got out of that place.

yea. Some dealers are very bad. I know it is hard to tell the truth, but the guy who bought my car from was not good at all, and i had to spend a lot for repairs. I do understand that dealers do have to make a living as well though...

To get you started on your driving experience is a good set of tires matched to an impeccable set of factory Mercedes-Benz wheels! The car incredibly tight. It glides over bumps effortlessly and holds well in the turns! Simply incredible! It handles and drives just as like new! We kid you not! The engine, while very comfortable and smooth does have all the power that you need. In fact, when called upon the engine will provide more than enough power to get you to where you're going, or to have some fun on the weekends! Acceleration is very smooth. You really feel in control of the car when its accelerating! The automatic transmission is very smooth and shifts just as it should.
"holds well in turns - we kid you not"
jezz. Picture in your mind what this guy looks like, you're probably real close.
This car has been bopping up and down the NY area for 5 months, from Mass to NJ and New York. Every time it sells, it goes to some poor fool that thinks he's ripping off the dealer. Car breaks, all kinds of threats, legal, lawyers etc, car goes to auction and yet another dealer and process starts all over. Each time with even more flagrant descriptions.
If you haven't bought a 140 yet, you'll have a hard time finding a good one. They're at the age where you simply have to know the previous owner. Personally.
You'll get no quarter from a New York used car dealer.

yes. that is very true. I have seen this grand edition on ebay many times. This one must be very bad. And also, buying a w140 is very difficult nowadays. People just sell the car, because it has a serious problem that they haven't told you about. And then, after a month of having the car, it breaks. Although this may not happen on all w140's, it happens on an awful lot of them....[:(]
very sad how the car we all love so much can be so bad in many ways.

RE: Why would you sell the AMG rims off of your Grand Edition??
Alright...
I will answer several of these questions.
Several reasons why the car would have stock rims rather than the monoblocks...
One reason could be, that with the monoblocks on the grand edition, they are 18"...and thus you will have a slightly firmer ride....not much firmer..but firmer..some people might not like that.. i had 18" monoblock on my s500..and even though liked how they looked..i could still a little firmer ride then stock..
another reason would be...maybe the guy thought..that he could sell them separately..and get more money.but it doesnt really make sense...because you can buy some new for around $2k with tires...and i think having these on the car, would bring more interest...
why wouldnt you buy a regular 99?
well, most people that want the grand edition...are buying it not because of the monoblocks..but more of the rarity (1 of 600)...the special wood, the shades, leather...and all the options that are standard... virtually the s600 options without the motor ... the grand edition.its over rated by some people..i see some people make it sound like its some sort of super special " 1 of only 600" ...as if it is like some shelby version of the original..
It is basically the same car ...the outside is the same as a regular 500..the engine and mechanics are the same...the only thing are interior options...and most of these options you can special order if you want.... nevertheless, it is a good buy, if you buy at a regular 99 s500 price..
-----------
regarding dealers....believe it or not..alot of them are good people....its that there are some out there that are shady....that give normal good dealers a bad name...and you only hear about the bad ones....you really dont hear about the good ones...
I know that because i had worked in the car business for 15 years...and i try to help people i deal with as if they are friends.....
The thing is, as dealers come in different sizes and shapes...so do buyers....i will give you an example...
Few years back...i had a bmw 750IL...and as many know these cars are very rare...a buyer contacted me from michigan for it....the car was mint with low miles...i was asking $5000 below what everyone was asking, because i had bought it at a great deal...He came from michigan....he looked at the car for couple of hours..then he mentioned to me that couple of the digital pixels (tiny dots) in the radio numbers is not showing well....excuse my language..but thats how "anal" he was..the car was 8 years old, with not even a single door ding !..lower mileage..and at $5000 below market....Right away i knew he is one of those troublesome buyers...i actually told him not to buy the car..if that bothered him....he drives it 7 hours home....and emails me how beautiful it drove and handled....then a month later ...i get a letter from the court..that he is suing for $3000...i was floored..so was my wife.....we couldnt believe it..part of what he demanded...was money for " new tires, tune-up, fluid changes,etc..." ....when he came to court...the judge was amazed at the way this guy was thinking, after the deal he got on the car..and dismissed the case...and the guy appealed it..and the second judge said the same thing..and dismissed it for the second time........ the sad part is...it cost me over $2000 in lawyer fees, time, stress, etc...Believe it or not..this is more common than you think....
Dealer sell hundred of cars a month ..and if a week or two later. one of those cars had the alternator or compressor stop functioning properly....which is no fault of the dealer or seller....you know that many uninformed buyers, will believe that the dealer intentionally screwed them..and they spread the word..and thats how in many cases dealers receive their reputation...
when i bought my s500...a few months afterwards...i felt that i had to replace the shocks..and few months after that i had to fix the A/C...now do i blame the seller....of course not...its a used car....and when i bought it..these cars, are known for such problems...
so for the guy who said ..that he would worry about the dealer checking all as " good" rather than excellent....i think the reason why many would check good than excellent..is because...some buyers are fussy..they expect brand new in excellent..believe me...so its safer to go with good...
Some of the honest dealers on ebay..still get a negative feedback once in a while..because they encounter a buyer like i encountered with the sale of the bmw...i see it all the time....a buyer would leave a negative feedback..because it took a week to get a title !....or after he drove 2000 miles back home one of his tires punctured..things like that.. even though..that they got the car thousands below market price..and even if they fix the problem..they are still ahead... The negative reputation will scare away many potential buyers...but only because these buyers, read things face value..and that many of these things are out of the control of the seller......
Cars are properties..and many are very sensitive about it....and yes there are lousy dealers out there.there are lousy people in other industries as well...but there are many good dealers....its easy to sit there and blame a dealer...thats how many in our society view them.(there are many more horrible even dangerous issues in pharmactuical, medical industries but its not pronounced).
I just want people to see this process from the other side..see the big picture.....and not be mislead by general stereotyping....

RE: Why would you sell the AMG rims off of your Grand Edition??
wow ghost. I really have to congratulate you on a very great post. That was like some kind of article in a magazine. Very good points in there as well. I actually did not even think of some of those things. It is true that there are many good people out there who get in trouble with stupid people who just try to get money out of everyone, and making everyone's life more difficult. Very great thoughts. Thanks ghost.[:)][:D][8D]
RE: Why would you sell the AMG rims off of your Grand Edition??
Excellent post, Ghost!
BTW, that car looks EXACTLY like mine, A '97 SWB. Also, I bought it of a "boutique" lot, (upscale corner lot), that has been there for 15 years and the guy only sells what he likes and top notch. What isn't so top notch, he puts to the back and is very candid about what is bad and good about the car, but these are very few. Not a PEEP out of this car.

The first ever built W220 was in Febuary 1997, they only built 25 units for testing on that month. on 1998 October was the full blast production of this unit they assemble approx 5,000-6,000 units a month.
W140 the last production was January 2001 VIN 1400571A432741 S 600 pullman
