lost key.... non remote key from dealer $30-$40 wow....
i called dealer here in greenland, nh. and the quoted me 30 to 40 dollars for a non-remote key for my 96 s class, although they need my vin to get the exact amount. that pretty expensive for a key. will this key work? can just any locksmith cut this key? i figured this way it will be cheaper and i like this key better than the ones from mercedes. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/MERCEDES-BENZ-LOGO-KEY-BLANK-1987-1996-RARE_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQcategoryZ40016QQitemZ802123 8773QQrdZ1QQsspagenameZWDVW

No, not any locksmith can work on it. I think it's something to do with lasers.
If you have seen gone in 60 seconds, they counldnt get into the mercedes because they need keys from dealers.

Laser? Don’t be spreading movie myths around...
There are 2 problems with Benz keys:
1-the threads on the key are vertically cut, usually this type of keys is cut with a tool similar to a drill bit, not like a typical key that is cut with a grinding wheel.
2-some newer Benz' have an electronic chip that has a stored algorithm to deactivate the alarm system and enable the starter relay, GM for example used that system in all 99 and above model years. I don’t know when MB did.
Some locksmiths will have a tools needed to cut a MB key, they will charge around 20 bucks for the key, you have to shop around tho, this type of cutter is not very common.
I dont know if the 96 would have the chip in it, i know the 98 does, and the 92 doesnt...

Find another dealer! The larger dealers cut them on the spot. As the precious post states " the machine is different it is not lazer cut"
$20 or so is the going rate I think

i too remember that from gone in 60 seconds as well Kutz. I believe they said that the mercedes-benz keys were "laser cut" , although, i still haven't seen any evidence of that being true, but it would be cool.

Ya, that's what I meant to say but can't edit that. When I went and paid about $25 USD, the service man said that mercedes has every VIN number and the computer cuts the blank key with a laser.
And yes, the newer mercedes have that algorithm feature.

yeah, still cant find for sure what year they startedusing that chip...
BTW other companies and dealers can make you a key using the VIN and solely the VIN, couple years ago i lost both keys for my chrysler, and the dealer made me a key using the VIN, after i showed him the registration...
