I have been considering a 1994 S320 with (I think) a bit over 100k miles. (I'd have to double check that.) Problem is, when I test drove it, the suspension felt a bit worn out. I have searched the forums, and saw that it looks like air suspension was only on a very few models, but I also see that there are other expensive types of suspensions. Can anyone tell me what kind of suspension is on this car, and how much it might cost to replace? My father and I are mechanics, so we can do the work ourselves. Thanks in advance.
94 s320 is going to have shocks and coil springs. The items that are subject to wear on the w140 models are the lower control arm rubber bushings, steering shock, sway bar links, ball joints - sometimes the upper control arms too.
You'll discover, MB is not known for their quality when it comes to rubber parts or wiring cover.
If you're looking for pricing, go to an online website that sells MB parts and price the steering and suspension items. You'll save LOTS of money if you can do the work yourself. But, depending on the job, you might spend $$$ on the tools to perform the job. For example, the lower control bushing require a special tool for extraction and installations. Without the tool you'll have a tough time removing the bushing and you'll destory new bushing when you attempt to install it due to the lip on the bushing edge.
I noticed here rsmcmahon states theres a special tool required for the removal and installation of the lower control arm bushings, was anyone able to use a makeshift tool to substitute for this, like maybe a c clamp, or is this tool neccessary?
