I've asked about this before and I've tried to do a search. My '97 S500 coupe's interior rearview mirror is damaged. It shakes and rattles. Obviously, something is broken inside. I was going to remove it and try to figure out what is wrong, but I can't figure out how to get it off. Any suggestions?
If I recall correctly, remove the rear plastic section of the mirror. The two halves are clipped together by several internal plastic clips. Carefully pry the rear off. Disconnect any electrical connections, and pull very hard but carefully (on the right parts) to remove the mirror from the ball joint mount.
If your mirror is loose and floppy, then a couple of small molded plastic clips have broken off inside. The small clips are poorly designed. They have to hold 2 pretty strong springs that hold the mirror firm against the mirror frame. I ended up gluing a couple of small wood chunks inside, drilling very small holes in the springs, and using small wood screws to fix the springs in place.
Thanks for the reply. I hate to sound so ignorant, but when you say 'pry off the back plastic piece' do you mean the back half of the mirror itself? Or do you mean the plastic parts that are attached to the overhead panel?
