Drivers' seat belt not retracting...SRS light? 95s420

Hello, Over time the seatbelt retracting mechanisim got progressivly worse until it hardly works at all. Towards the end of its functioning the SRS light came on and now never goes off. Would like to repair or replace mechanisim myself. Any help? This is my first of what will probably be many posts. I love the car, but its one thing after another.
