I have owned two W140s both of which have been in-line six cylinder cars. The first a S320L was a great car and the second which I am currently driving is an S280. This too has been a great car if slightly underpowered before the revs kick in and off you go.
I have the opportunity to buy either a `97 S320 with FMBSH and 52,000 miles or a `97 S500 with FSH and 59,000 miles. Insurance and fuel consumption is not an issue. Reliability is as I use the car as a daily driver and have put 60,000 miles on my S280 in the last two and half years.
I appreciate that ultimately it`s my call but would welcome any opinions. Which would you buy and why?

RE: S500-V-S320
I'm not sure what the intials stand for, but if fuel consumption is not an issue then I'd go for the S500. It has power to spare and the additional goodies make it worth the while.[:D]

You know you're German if:
You went to school in a Gymnasium
You check your shoes for candy on December 6
You have real candles on your Christmas tree
You know a Frankfurter is a person not a hotdog
Schnitzel with noodles is your favorite meal, not a song in a cheesy musical!
You drive the Autobahn in a Mercedes-Benz at the speed of sound!
Definitely go for S500. More powerful engine also means the car has to hustle less (no need to floor the pedal or drive it hard to pull away), so longer car life......
My 97 S500 is the most wonderfull car I have ever owned. The engine is awesome. There is nothing like the sound (and feeling) of this motor as the variable intake cam "moves" and the car sings as the revs build. Simply awesome.
