The Temperature display in our 95 S420 does not light up. Neither side. Are they supposed to be lit when the lights are on? I would assume so, considering the class of car... but maybe not?

Yes, they are both supposed to light up.
In my 95 S420 one side does, and the other does not.
The two small LCD temperature panels are each meant to light up, as I believe are the three adjusting wheels - the two temperature ones, and the central fan speed one.
One of my three wheels light up.
I tried to get my dealer to replace bulbs in the unit - but they didn't. They told me I would have to buy a whole replacement climate control unit. But, I have seen some posts here that discuss how to change bulbs = by carefully prying off the auto switch covers.
Have a search of the forums and see how you get on.
Here are 2 suggestions I copied when I changed my climate control bulbs.... Unknown authors?
You need to carefully remove the "auto" button to access the bulb. The bulb is located inside the small round compartment with the slot on it. If you grab the small cover with a pair of needle nose pliers it should pull off. Then you must pull the bulb out of its socket. Small needle nose pliers will work to pull the bulb out, but you must be careful not to break the bulb
.......... or ..............
I replaced both my climate control bulbs in 20 minutes! Not hard at all to replace these bulbs. Sorry no pictures, but I will try to be specific.
Tools needed: Small screwdriver, needle nose pliers, fish tank hose. The hose that runs to the the pump that feeds air to the fish, or some hose that is near that size.
First you will need a small screwdriver to pry off the auto buttons on the climate control module. Gently pry at the top and bottom of the auto switch, it will come off with GENTLE coaxing.
Under the auto switches you will see a round cap with a slit in it. The bulb is under these caps. Grab the cap gently with the needle nose and pull it off.
Now you should see the bulb. It's deep in the module and impossile to grab, even with needle nose, so here is where you will use the hose.
Slide the hose over the bulb until it's semi tight.
Wiggle the hose and pull. After a little coaxing you should be able to get the bulb to wiggle loose from the socket. It works, trust me. Make sure your hose is not to big or it will not grab the bulb. I actually used some heat shrink hose for mine, worked just fine.
Okay, once you have removed the old bulb, place the new bulb on the tip of the hose and guide it back into the socket. I guided my bulbs in, and then used my small screwdriver to push the bulb firmly into the socket. It will help to have the lights on so you can see when the bulb is in right.
Now replace the small round cap. The cap requires you press one side in slightly to re-install them. Kinda like a child proff cough syrup bottle.
Finally, replace the auto button and marvel at what you've just done!
My lights blew years ago, I can't believe it's this easy.
