I haven't been on the forum for a while, owing to having to work 26 hours a day to earn enough to maintain my S280.....door check strap.....rear window regulator.....throttle housing...all in the last 3 months...still love her though!
Anyhow, slight problem that needs some sensible advice. The wife called today to tell me that one of the rear external door handles had broken (I couldn't believe it either!) The door was semi-closed (no assist-it's only a 280) so she gave it a jolt to get it fully closed. The real problem is that the child locks are activated, so any guesses how I can open the door to replace the broken handle??
Pleased to report that I got this sorted quite easily. When I got home, I discovered that the entire door handle was loose to the point that it could be completely lifted out of the door. It turns out that the bolt that holds the handle in place had work-loosened. For future refernce, the fix was simple....open the door and pull the rubber door seal around the door handle area. This will reveal a circular hole thru which you can access the single retaining bolt. Tighten as required, then replace the door seal. Done.
For front doors, the bolt is accessed by removing the plastic cap which is found adjacent to the door handle on the side of the door panel.
