'97 S500 coupe: Ayone ever had this one? Driving (for example) on the highway at 65-80 mph. I lift off the gas pedal and the car starts to slow. Then, gently, it accelerates slightly and briefly. Then it continues to slow.
Are you getting any Check Engine lights? Your MAF, MAF wiring, or Electronic Throttle Actuator or wiring may be suspect. My MAF wire insulation was deteriorated, and caused some cross-talk between the wires. This caused the engine to surge slightly at idle. I can't say I remember the engine surging at high speeds. See if you can pull any codes from the car, and check out your wiring. Click on the link below my signature and read up on ETA's and MAF's listed in the Projects page.

"Speed is just a question of money...how fast you wanna go?"
No, no check enging lights, thank goodness. I'll try to pull codes and see if anything comes up. I should have been more clear--it's happening at idle, after I lift off either at a stop or when slowing from high speed.
well, I just experienced the same problem this morning. Car started up fine this AM then when I exited the interstate, I hit a bump, came to the light and noticed my brakes were harder to push. I made it to employee parking at work, just to noticed the crazy idle surging...backed the car up and parked it. Sooo my question is: where are all the vaccum line in the engine compartment. I must have loosened one or it came undone. That is my theory... no codes pulled... no mods done to car... any suggestions?
ok, i was able to fix the problem once I got home. With the car running I could hear this major Hissing noise, TADA! It was a vaccum hose on the top part of the engine... It had popped off...when I re-connected it the engine immediately idled fine. Does anyone know what the name of that vaccum hose is, part number? This fixed my problem. [:D]
