My uncle just lost reverse in his s class , his forward gears are all strong. My question is, can he fix this reverse problem with the tranny in place or must it be removed. If he removes it he plans on doing a complete overhaul, which his mechanic quoted him 2200. He had a delay in reverse for a while now. I hope i dont have to deal with this problem since i have a 3 second delay in reverse as well.
There was a nice post I believe by BENZDOC not too long ago
describing what is happening when reverse takes several seconds to engage. Essentially, it is a valve in the valve body going bad as I recall. Eventually it degrades to the point where reverse won't engage at all. Yours is headed in that direction. Look up his post.
I don't know about pulling the entire transmission to repair. Seems like you may have to. I think you may as well overhaul the whole thing if your're going to keep the car a while.
My '92 300SE did the exact same thing. I talked to what seemed like a million people about this and they all said it needed to be rebuilt. And to be honest with you $2200 is on the low side of the quotes I received. I know that this is not what you wanted to hear, but at least you will have a new transmission when it is all done and said. Just out of curiosity, how many miles does your car have?
That is almost exactly the mileage (125,000) that my 300SE reverse went out. I also have a '93 300SE with 117,000 and the transmission is working great. Knock on wood!!!!!!!!!!!
Just to add to this, I was just speaking with my uncle, he said this problem happened one day after changing his trans fluid. He used dextron 3, a benz filter and they didnt do a torque converter flush. I always heard of not changing your fluid if your tranny is on its way. I was wondering if this is the right fluid and I will double check the level. Now
I am scared to flush mine, incase I totaly lose reverse as well.

Nah, i guess his reverse gear have been a bit slow getting in lately, then when he changed the fluid he might have been a bit sloppy with the cleanness, and got some dirt in the oil pan. But changing the oil without changing in the converter is like peeing in the ocean it helps nothing.
I guess that his reverse gear is a bit worn out, and might need a renewal, or maybe just to get the pressure back again…
