Got the new front main seal in. Now on to the secondary

air pump, the tensioner pulley, the guide pulley, the fan clutch, reinstall radiator and auxiliary fans, coolant flush, and put the exhaust back together, and I'm done. Easy.

I'll post a DIY on the main seal in a bit.

What prompted all this work Brett? If we're anything alike (and I strongly suspect we are[:)]), there was probably one drop of oil that leaked out[;)].

No. More than a drop. I knew it had an oil leak when I got the car.

I was told it was the valve cover(s). As I poked around here and there in the engine compartment, I began to suspect the front main seal. A couple months ago my tensioner pulley simply fell off (rusted out bearings), and the project to replace it got out of control. I just hope I can remember how to put it all back together.

Ugh, I know the feeling. It's like the car somehow realizes that it's new owner is going to repair things, so it starts acting up to get it's way.

Seems that all S-klasse are the same and I know they are female or at least i think so. Mine seems to think I want to pull into every Mercedes dealership and buy her something? Have either of you arrived at the same conclusion? Just wondering.... do you hear strange whispers while driving too? hhhhmmmmm....

haha. No strange whispers. Just the sound of failing bearings and wobbly pulleys

on the AC compressor and alternator. Pretty soon, I'll have replaced everything on the front of the damn engine. I guess that's what several years of winter driving in New England does to a car.
