One day i noticed my wiper blade was out too far and wiping beyond the windshield. I thought there would be some type of adjustment so i took it to the mercedes dealership. He told me the the arm went in and out as it went around and the transmission was bad. Then he tells me it's $1400. So i forget about it. Now i've taken the wiper assembly out to replace while replacing my evaporator core, and i've decided to try to fix it. I can't seem to get the case open though, any ideas?
I had this fault 5 years ago - if my memory serves me right I think that there are some allen screws on the rear. Anyway its realy easy to open! When you get inside you will see a nylon gear sprocket - it is this that wears or strips teeth. The most common cause being snow on the windscreen and then turning the wipers on!
Don't just turn the sprocket around as it uses all of the teeth.Just take it to an engineering shop and have them make you a new one out of tough nylon!
Cost me £38 - alot cheaper than £1000 I was quoted and its still working fine![:D]
[:)] mercs600: you may remember, you discussed this topic with "tower". it was nov 2004. he was going to have some of these gears made up in a machine shop and was going to make a few extra while he was at it. he was planning to sell a few, he thought he would charge $17 Canadian.
I found the post by typing "windshied wiper" in the search feature,
