Sorry. Ok I am lookig at a 1995 S430 with 171,000 miles for $8,999.00. My son noticed, once we pulled over at my other sons house during a test drive, that the cars fender part next to the engine was very hot. Hotter than any other car. I also noticed a small amount of smoke. I was standing on the outside looking in when my youngest son was sitting, looking in it. My oldest son also noticed. He looked for a source but we didnt see it anymore. Even after my youngest pushed it at a fast pace down is street. The dealer claims he just had it serviced put new stoppers on and new tires. This is a very clean S. Loaded except of the cd changer. Bule with grey insides with a very nice looking bronde mirror tint. Any advice would be helpful.
Not based in the US but the price for that sort of mileage seems quite high to me. Feel sure that there would be lower mileage examples available which would have potentially fewer problems.
W140s are complicated cars and when they go wrong they can be very expensive to put right. What is most important is the car`s service and maintenance record.
I would have a good look around before committing myself. The 1995 S420 had the old style 4 speed autobox which many consider to be more reliable than the electronic 5 speed that replaced it half way through `96.

RE: Can a guy some BENZ MEN advice?
Smoke of ANY kind is a warning flag that needs checked out. Depending on the outside temp the car can seem very hot ( when it's 98 here in Kentucky mine seems like it's gone into meltdown mode!). What was the temp on the gauge in the instrument cluster?
You also need to find out when the timing chain and guide rails were last replaced. If they haven't been done within the last 100,000 miles that will cost you another $1000 to $1500. It must be done with miles that high
I paid $8250 for S500 with 140,000 from a dealer. Your price seems rather high.
I'd recommend that if you are interested in the car you take it to an independent mechanic plop down about $200 and have them go over it completely. These beasts are wonderful cars but extremely expensive to fix!

You know you're German if:
You went to school in a Gymnasium
You check your shoes for candy on December 6
You have real candles on your Christmas tree
You know a Frankfurter is a person not a hotdog
Schnitzel with noodles is your favorite meal, not a song in a cheesy musical!
You drive the Autobahn in a Mercedes-Benz at the speed of sound!
