My wifes car got in Limp Mode, It lost its drive by wire and I had to depress the paddle to the metal to keep it mooving. The biggest pain was that I had to give my nice S600 to my wife. She complained that the S500 is not save to drive. She did not like to reset the ignition to bring it back to normal. Anyhow, I wanted my S600 back so I connected the Trisco Scanner to the brain and received the following trouble codes:
Code 07 - EFP N4/1 Ctrl Unit or Gear Selector Fault.
Code 48 - Set Value Incorrect, potentiometer Monitoring M16/1r1
Code 96 Starter Lockout and Reverse Sig. Lamp Switch S16/3 Fault
Code 224 Idle Speed Contact Switch S29/3 Fault.
I would like to reset the fault codes but after a confirmed reset from my Trisco Scanner, I was still able to read the same fault codes again. Reason for resetting is that I would like to confirm the fault codes for validity after a short drive before I attemt a repair.
Any suggestion on how to reset. Has anybody performed a repair on the idle speed control?
That one code, 48, sends shivers down my spine. A few people (including myself) have dug deep into the bowels of the dreaded Electronic Throttle Actuators. They can be rewired, if the wiring is in fact the problem. If the pot(s)inside the units are the problem, it's more difficult. I would first test each of the other components individually. I too have a Trisco scanner, and I found that lots of the codes I was getting were not accurate. That's not to say the scanner is at fault, it's just the way the symptoms appear to the car's CAN network. If after you test each of the components, and they check out good, check the wiring of the ETA leads. You'll have to CAREFULLY cut the sheathing to see inside. It could be that the insulation is deteriorated and causing shorts. I had intermittant Check Engine lights come up, and that was why. Read my write-up on my ETA rewire project. Click on the link down by my signature, and go to Projects, Passenger Side ETA Rewire. Keep us posted.
p.s. If you need a place to get rebuilt ETA's, contact Merc600sec, he went through this with his S600.

The idle contact switch will definitely send your car into limp until you replace it.
Fortunately, it's a $50 part and really easy to do.
The swith is connected direcly to the gas pedal.
Thanks for your answers!
Since my last post I had no more problem with the car, it is just running fine. I am trying to duplicate the problem but I am not able to reset the error codes with my Trisco Scanner. I can not believe that the reverse and lockout switch could be bad, because its functions are ok. I inspcted the engine wiring harness, it looks good with no cracks.
I could start replacing the switches but I would like to verify the fault code.
I would suggest you download the test procedures for each of the components to check them at the component level. Alldata has the test procedures to do this (please use the Alldata link on my page if you want to sign up with Alldata). Have you checked the insulation on the wires of the ETA itself? You can't see the condition of the insulation unless you do some cutting. I strongly suggest you take a peek to see if what the wire condition is.
Peter,
I have only a Alldata S600 contract, but I will get a S500 soon, yes will use your link. I believe the ETA is deep down there between the cylinder banks. I have to consult Alldata on how to get to it and on the correct procedure.
Have you had problems with your Trisco scanner to erase faults from the computer?
I believe you're right. On the V8 the ETA is between the cylinder banks. Yes, I've had some trouble with my Trisco Scanner. I'm not really happy with it. It's not communicating with my ETA's at all, but that could be an ETA problem. I also have a caution light for my SRS system. At one time the scanner told me I had a fault with the passenger seat occupancy sensor. Now it tells me nothing is wrong, but I still have the warning light. I'd like to find a different scanner, but I haven't had any luck yet.
