W 140 has windows "glasses" with double layer sort of look. On top of the glass where it slides into the doorsill, it gets thinner. You could see a double layer on glass edges. (Sorry, I am not very good at describing) Window has to be half way down for someone to see the edge effects.
I love this look. It makes the car look like they are bullet proof glass, and expensive.
Does anyone know what the purpose of this is? or Why they made them this way?

RE: Does anyone know why?
It is double glazing and it is to reduce noise and temperature on the window.
The reason it is this way is to get the outer window far out, to make the side more slick and thereby reduce drag and noise.

But if you want to, just tell people it's an armoured car...we won't tell, it'll just be our secret...shhhh![:D]

You know you're German if:
You went to school in a Gymnasium
You check your shoes for candy on December 6
You have real candles on your Christmas tree
You know a Frankfurter is a person not a hotdog
Schnitzel with noodles is your favorite meal, not a song in a cheesy musical!
You drive the Autobahn in a Mercedes-Benz at the speed of sound!
Apart from the sound insulation inside the car this window construction effectively eliminates condensation as a pocket of air is trapped between each pane of glass.
What`s also quite neat is that these panes even have a UV filter which filters out harmful rays! Occupant safety or what?
Would any of you agree that W140 is the best looking car MB has ever made considering W220, new 07 S-class, and Maybach?
I just wish they re-create this design in the future.
I'm with you on this, mostly. I think the W140 "look" is way better than any subsequent S class, and quite probably better than all other newer sedans.
However, the W126 is a mighty fine looking car, as are several of the older coupes and convertibles.
I don't think I'd want them to re-invent the W140. Never look back, always go forward. And that way we (MB enthusiasts) get to enjoy an increasingly rare car. [:)]
that is an absolute beauty. I`ve been thinking about replacing my W140 with the C140 and went to see a CL500 recently.
There is no doubt that, if it`s possible, the standard of fit and finish of the car is even higher than the saloon! How about this it even has the chrome inserts in the door running down to the locking mechanism. This is something that I haven`t seen on any other Benz since the late R107s.
My only grumble is the rear seat space which given the size of the car is not that good even for a coupe. My kids love the roominess of the W140 so for the time being at least it will remain the car of choice.
