I have the opportunity to buy a 1994 build S320 with 138000 ks. 1 owner, from new, but the car has left the original area where it was purchased and lived, and turned up 2000 ks away for sale at a BARGAIN price, actually under lower trade price.
Since I know nothing about these lovely machines, would anyone please advise me as to whether this may be "a pig in a poke", "lemon" or could it be a bargain. The dealer is a general dealer of used cars and has said he bought it right. I would appreciate comments from you WISEMEN please before I make a silly booboo.
There is nothing special about buying a W140 vs. any other car.
Research, research, research. Is the maintenance log stamped? Or does it have any other records of regular maintenance? Are there extra service records or receipts to indicate repairs which have been done? Does the car have all of the original manuals and keys with it, indicating that the previous owner was a careful, conscientious owner. Any evidence of major accidents? I would recommend a pre-purchase inspection at an independent shop if you're not too car savvy. And, finally, there is no substitute for seeing, touching, and driving the car yourself.
After all that advice, I broke most rules of used car buying when I bought my W140 long distance without ever seeing it. But, I did ask many, many questions of the selling dealer and the mechanic that did an inspection for the dealer, and I requested numerous pictures before buying.
Search this forum for posts on common problem areas and for posts that asked the same question as yours, and you'll find a lot of info on problem areas specific to the W140.
[:)]Yup Brett said it right.
You should also have a little credit card thing with the secret radio code on it. so that when you eventualy replace the battery you can get the radio going again.
