Rear Windows . . . a large cracking sound and now they won't go up . . .

Hey Guys,

My Dad is having a problem with the rear right-hand-side window in his '93 300SE. I was rolling down the window the other day when I heard a pretty loud "crack" sound. I tried to roll the window back up, but it wouldn't budge, so I used my hands to push it up manually. Even using my hands, I can't get it to go all of the way up. There is still about a half-inch opening at the top of the window.

I know that there are problems with the rear window regulators in this car, but I don't think that is my problem due to the loud cracking sound, and due to the fact that I can't even push the window up all the way.

Any suggestions? Do you think that the window came off of it's track? If so, is it a real PIA to get the door skin off to fix the problem?

Thanks for the help!
Bryan

Hi bdonkersgoed.

Its not tracks. I am afraid its the dreaded regulator. The steel cable has chewed up the nylon gearing. Thats what you heard crack.

Time to get that regulator changed [:0]

To roll up the window temporarily before the perminant fix, you must tap window button down for a split second and then press upward while a buddy gives it a helping hand by pulling the glass up by hand. Keep doing this in stages until you get it all the way up.

Crappy! I thought it would just be a simple fix that I could do on my own without any parts needed. I am in final exams right now so I don't even have time for two weeks to really look at it :( I always thought that the regulator was an electrical part; I guess I was wrong.

How much did you guys have to pay for the part? Is it something that you can change yourself, or should I get the dealer to do it?

Thanks,
Bryan

I did get the window back up by putting a hand on each side of the window and pulling it up manually. It just comes back down about 1/2 " after driving (due to bumps in the road and stuff).

Regards,
Bryan

Hello again guys,

Do I need just the window regulator, or both the regulator and the motor? There is a regulator for sale on Ebay at $65US (list is supposedly about $115US) which isn't too bad.

Thanks,
Bryan

You will just need the regulator. It looks a bit like a bow. The regulators are side specific so you must make sure you buy the correct one.

Thanks again!

Would I need to buy the plastic gearing as well, or is that included with the regulator?

Here is the item I am looking at on Ebay:

Thanks!

Everything you need is there. The gearing is housed in the centre section. The only thing you may need is are five 4.5mm pop rivets and a rivet gun.
