1995 S320 reverse GRINDS, forward works fine......whats the problem???

When I put it in reverse, it grinds and then catches, but if I push the gas or go up an incline it starts grinding again. The forward gears work fine. Do I need a new transmission, or can this one be rebuilt, or is it a simple fix? Please help me you knowledgeable Mercedes people....the transmission shops are out to get me. Thank you.

are the gear changes (1-4) still silky?
have you flushed the fluid?
It sounds to me like either the fluid is too low or the torque convertor is worn out

have you change the trans fluid lately? if so, check if the fluid is low? let me know if thats the case? last time when i change the fluid i only put like a qt and a half, there was like 5 second delay in reverse and i got pretty scared. its hard to check to see the if the fluid its low or not. when you change the fluid just add a little over 2 quarts. if someone knows the exact amount please post. i am not even goin to bother with the converter box, i just change it a few more times and not mess with that. i hope thats the case. wish you luck...

No no, it is important to change on the torque converter.

Also change the filter in your automatic gearbox.

Total amount of oil depends on your gearbox, but typical amounts is (Need your chassis number) 5,5-7,7 litres.

the owner's manual indicates 5.5liters of trabby fluid if its just a drain, but if the tranny is to be overhauled meaning the converter needs to be filled it requires 7.7liters, the grinding usually indicates worn-out gears i hope that's not the case, or else the tranny needs to be overhauled and thats really cost u a lot,

Humm, in my document it says, on the gearbox that consume 5,5 with change, it should take 6,2 after overhaul.
