After logging on as a guest for several months, I have finally registered.
With the recent purchase of a 92 300 SD with 166K on the odometer, I thought it best to become a member. I did extensive research and looked at countless diesels before making the purchase. This car is in great shape and has been well cared for. The forum has proved to be an invaluable tool in the quest for a new/used Benz. Thanks to all the members for your dedication to the Mercedes and sharing a wealth of information!
The 300 SD is light years beyond my first Mercedes, a 1981 300 D. The 140 body and all the options the come along with the S class make me feel like I'm driving a diesel spaceship.
Of course everyone has an opinion regarding the 140 (especially the diesel). For every person who says "run like the wind", there's another who says "fantastic, great car". Not being diehard DIY kind of guy, I checked with several mechanics regarding maintanence costs, and the general consensus was upkeep is not much more than older diesel models. Am I delusional?
* First question / problem: Glowplug light comes on intermittently. Service records indicate glowplugs were replaced a year and a half ago. Wire harness? Please advise.
Any suggestions, tips, pearls of wisdom would be appreciated. What should I be expecting in the near future (166K)? Other than regular oil changes, any additional preventative measures would be appreciated. My goal is to take this car to the 300K mark.
Welcome and congratulations on your purchase. Unfortunately, I haven't the foggiest clue about the diesel motor on the 140 except that it's prone to bending rods. This is usually evident by a large oil consumption. Most of these problems start to occur at around 100K and when the engine is rebuilt, I believe there is a stronger rod that MB is supplying- not sure though. Good luck and enjoy your new "flagship"!
Paul
