hi. new to the w140

hi. i'm new to the w140...although i've had a w126 for 15 odd years....and recently bought a w210 as well.

i've just bought a 1995/6 S600L. its got 91k on it...with pretty much full history. i've got the following list so far of things that need to be done.

any help that you can give me or point me in the direction of good suppliers (in the UK) would be greatly appreciated.

1. instrument cluster backlights
2. headlight switch backlights
3. central vent controller backlights
4. new ashtray with lighter (its latches or springs don't work...it just rolls open and rolls shut)
5. stereo...am looking into various options.
6. glovebox light
7. floor mats
8. the front centre armrest is unhinged from one side...this happened when the took the phone out.
9. the rear defrost switch...always on.
10. want to put in the 'v12' gear selector
11. needs new tires
12. right hand headlight wiper motor (although this is not the end of the world)
13. driver visor mirror lights
14. the button on the rear vents that controls the on/off
15. front passenger lumbar support button is missing.

afew other things.

i've noticed that the oil pressure guage is running between 2-3....a while back it was a full 3. could this be due to oil loss?? i have not done any oil servicing to the car yet....so it could be that it was low on oil when i got it.

what spec oil is recommended?

the temperature runs close to 100....is this normal for this car? AND YES....THE ENGINE RUNS EXTREMELY HOT...YOU CAN'T EVEN COME NEAR THE CAR BECAUSE OF THE AMOUNT OF HEAT COMING OUT FROM UNDERNEATH....THE ENGINE IS A VIRTUAL OVEN!!

other than that...there's nothing else that i can point a finger at right now. but will update accordingly.

the car on the whole is amazing. its gas mileage is not much worse than of a 8cyl bmw...it gave me close to 30mpg on the motorway (at 70-80mph), and is around the 10-14mpg mark driving in city traffic...stop/go.

it is extremely spacious, and you just can't hear the engine. all the bells and whistles except parking sensors...which i really need by the way!!!

there are more photos on the w126 forum...

thanks for the feedback

RE: hi. new to the w140

Beautiful car! Congratulations! Most of the items you mention seem pretty minor. I would suggest doing a search with the appropriate key word like "instrument cluster backlight" Those backlights are pretty easy if you have the right tools. As I "only" have the the V8, I can't comment on the heat but this guy can help http://pages.prodigy.net/jforgione/MB_S500.html. My car runs about 80-90 degrees. Also there are a few really good S600 guys on this site. Good luck and enjoy.

RE: hi. new to the w140

Welcome mercbuff. Very nice car. V12's run very hot. I would strongly suggest you inspect your viscous fan clutch. Mine was not working well, and caused running temps of about 120 C in the summer in stop and go traffic. Once I changed it, it made a big difference. It hasn't gone over 105 in the same conditions. I also pop my hood once I pull the Beast into the garage. It helps things cool off faster. Check my website for DIY stuff. Also, as pchansen1 suggested, got to Jim F's webpage. He has a gizmo that turns on the aux fans sooner to help cool the engine even more.

Congrats. Sounds little hot. Oil pressure is fine as long as it goes back up to 3

above 2000 rpm. It'll drop when it idles warm. My car runs typically between 80 and 90 degrees, but that is in typical San Diego weather. Sunny and 70 degrees F. Check your radiator for cleanliness. And replace the fan clutch as pcmaher says.

update

thanx for all the advice. i managed to pick up all the bulbs etc for all the points that weren't working...and hope to have them fitted in a day or so.

afew more things;

1. the one-touch windows are not working. i can raiser / lower the windows by holding the buttons at stage 1, but when i press it to stage 2, the window stops moving. this is the case on all four windows...from all the buttons. any ideas?

2. i changed the battery in the remote key, and now when i lock / unlock the car, both the green and red lights (in the doors and rear view) flash very fast...for about 15 seconds. than they shut down. what went wrong here...and how do i fix this?

i managed to order a owners manual from the dealer...so until it gets here i can't even attempt any troubleshooting.

by the way, how do i know what kind of charcoal filter i have? i have a button on the dash that looks like air passing through a filter-type graphic.

i want to change the air filters....which ones do i need to buy?

Thanks again.

RE: hi. new to the w140

As for the windows- they need to re-learn their limits. This happens when the battery is disconnected. For each window, press the button down (stage 1) and let it travel all the way. Keep holding the button down for a few seconds after the window stops moving. Raise the window in the same manner and hold the button for a few seconds after the window is closed. This should reset the system. If the window bobs up and down when trying to close (especially the rears), there is resistance in the window track and/or regulator and the window's safety features are stopping the window from closing. The window "thinks" your child's arm is caught in the window.

Your climate control has an activated charcoal filter.

Incoming air is supposed to be directed through it automatically when the climate control senses high levels of particulates (smoke) or manually when you press the button. It's expensive (around US$300-400) and probably not worth replacing (in my opinion). It's buried under the windshield wipers and requires quite a bit of disassembly to get to, meaning on top of the cost of the filter, you're looking at at least a couple hrs of labor charges to replace it (unless you DIY). The climate control has two other filters: the pollen or dust filter and the recirculated air filter. The recirculated air filter is a simple, coarse filter located in the passenger footwell. It's cheap (about US$15). The pollen filter is accessed from under the hood. Search the forum to find a nice post with pics to show replacement. The author may have been "Rainmaker." There are two options for the pollen filter: one with a layer of activated charcoal on it (very expensive, US$115, and one without (cheap, US$15 or maybe $30 or so). The activated charcoal coated filter is supposed to be for cars with the charcoal filter, and the one without charcoal is for cars w/o the charcoal filter option. But, I didn't see the reason for spending so much on a climate control filter, so I just bought the simple filter. A little smell here and there doesn't bother me, and we drive with the windows down a lot in San Diego anyway.

How long time did you use to change the batteries?

You might try to synchronise that unit with the car.
Depending on what year and what FBS system you have it is different procedure.
I guess your car is manufactured after 01/94 with IFZ unit with part number 202 820 40 26 or 202 820 43 26

1. Direct you’re key towards a receiver.
2. Push locking/unlocking button shortly
3. Within the next 30 seconds engage ignition.
