I need your guy's help on this one... . As per usual - @ every 3 months - my antennae on my 99 S500 broke again!! Actually, I am very tired having to replace it this often.
What I need help on is on the following: I want to replace the retractable antennae with a fixed extended one. Several reasons and one of them is that I get very poor reception when listening to AM radio because the antennae is a little too short - actually fully extended. I figured that if I could replace it with a longer fixed antennae, that I would solve this problem as well. Does anyone of you know where I can buy a conversion kit for a fixed antennae?? Can this be done?? Please help me on this!! I thought about getting satellite radio, but I listen to KFI640 AM Talk Radio exclusively (or CD's) but I do not believe that neither Sirius or XM Satellite radio broadcast this station or do they??
It was my understanding that the S-class antennae was for FM and C-tel functions only and that AM was either taken care of via an embedded wire in the rear window or a bonding strap in the rear bumper. If memory serves, and sometimes it doesn't- FM is length sensitive- 33" I think.
Good luck!
Paul

The fender antenna is for C-tel, the AM is in the glass and the other is in the bumper and they both go into a splitter. You could put in one of those rubber universal antennas but they are ugly. If you dont have the C-tel optionn lower the antenna and then remove power. You could experiment by going to Pep Boys and see if you can find a fixed mast antenna, but getting the contour of the body is tough and then there is the car wash problem, and I think the MB antenna connector is unique. I think Becker had a universal replacement
My 92 has only had the mast replaced once!
